Job Summary:

Kovitz Shifrin Nesbit continues to grow! A well-established and leading real estate tax firm focusing on the appeal of commercial, industrial, and investment property is seeking a full-time Real Estate Tax Associate for our Homewood, IL office. The ideal candidate will have 2+ years of experience researching and filing property tax appeals with the Cook/Collar County Assessor Offices, the Cook County Board of Review, and the Illinois Property Tax Appeal Board. KSN supports attorneys who are eager to learn, have a strong work ethic, and practices law with an entrepreneurial spirit.


Starting salary is $115,000. This is an in-office position. Business hours for this exempt position are 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. KSN offers a full benefits package including medical, dental, vision, short and long-term disability, basic life/AD & D coverage, voluntary life insurance, critical illness, accident, hospital, and a retirement plan for those who are eligible.

Duties/Responsibilities:

ยท Draft, file, and manage complaints, briefs, and supporting evidence for property tax appeals involving both income-producing and owner-occupied properties.

ยท Analyze assessment records, valuation histories, and related documentation to develop effective appeal strategies.

ยท Manage property tax appeals for complex real estate development projects, including new construction, substantial rehabilitation, and demolition matters.

ยท Monitor filings, assist with court call management, and support document production for tax objection cases in Circuit Court proceedings.

ยท Following appropriate training and experience, participate in the economic development aspects of property tax appeals, including tax incentive programs such as Class 6b, Class 7, Class 8, and Tax Increment Financing (TIF).

ยท Maintain appeal dockets and oversee all phases of obtaining, monitoring, and renewing tax incentive classifications (e.g., Class 6b and Class 8).

ยท Provide support on tax proration matters and other related projects as assigned.

ยท Communicate clearly and professionally with clients regarding appeal status, data requests, outcomes, and strategic recommendations.

ยท Coordinate with County representatives on hearings, scheduling, settlements, refunds, and related matters.

ยท Prepare and maintain professional written correspondence and documentation.

ยท Participate in all Continuing Legal Education trainings.

ยท Any other duties as necessary or required.

Requirements:

Qualifications:

ยท Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school.

ยท Active license to practice law in the State of Illinois (in good standing).

ยท Prior experience in real estate, municipal development, or property tax appeals is strongly preferred; however, demonstrated ability to learn quickly, apply new concepts effectively, and deliver results is of greater importance than length of experience.

ยท Experience with Microsoft software suite including Word, Excel, Outlook, and Access is a plus.

ยท Ability to compose clear, grammatically correct, and persuasive briefs and business correspondence.

ยท Exercise good judgment in dealing with highly confidential matters.

ยท High level of initiative and self-motivation.

ยท Strong time management skills with the ability to balance multiple deadlines and a varied workload independently.

ยท High level of professionalism, tact, and diplomacy when interacting with clients, appraisers, and government officials.

ยท Ability to interpret complex assessment data and apply sound judgment to address nuanced and sensitive matters.
