Doeren Mayhew is seeking an experienced Tax Associate to join our State and Local Tax (SALT) team. The ideal candidate will have a background in state and local income tax, property tax, or sales tax. This role offers the opportunity to work with a diverse client base and to contribute to the growth and success of our Grand Rapids, Michigan-based SALT practice. This position is available in our Troy, MI; Grand Rapids, MI; or Houston, TX offices.

Responsibilities:

  • Prepare state and local sales tax returns, personal property tax returns, C-corporation, S-corporation, and Partnership income returns
  • Conduct research and provide technical advice on state and local tax issues
  • Assist clients with state and local tax audits, including audit defense and negotiation
  • Stay current on state and local tax laws and regulations and communicate changes to clients and team members
  • Research technical matters related to state and local tax
  • Collaborate with other departments to ensure comprehensive client service

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's and/or masterโ€™s degree in accounting, taxation, or a related field
  • CPA or CPA track preferred, but not required
  • 1 year of experience in state and local tax, preferably in a public accounting or consulting firm
  • Knowledge of state and local tax laws and regulations
  • Excellent, analytical, problem-solving, and research skills, and written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Familiarity in Microsoft Office Suite and CCH Axcess/GoSystem Tax, Avalara/Vertext/TaxJar, or TaxScribe, as relevant
  • Located within commuting distance of Troy or Grand Rapids, MI or Houston, TX.
