Job description

General Definition and Conditions of Work:
  • Performs skilled work enforcing and monitoring applicable ordinances, codes and standards related to zoning, land use, nuisance housing, property maintenance codes, health and life safety, acts of nature and disaster, and other public concerns.

Essential Functions/Typical Tasks:
  • Assists with clerical work including completion of reports and notices, answering telephones, interaction with contractors, property owners, developers, and representatives of other local, state, or federal agencies, both in the field and in the office.
  • Enforce the Property Maintenance Code and other applicable Town ordinances.
  • Conduct site inspections of residential, commercial, and industrial construction sites and post-construction sites to verify compliance with erosion and sediment control measures and stormwater management plans.
  • Conduct inspections of residential, commercial, industrial, and vacant properties to identify code violations.
  • Investigate citizen complaints regarding property maintenance issues, nuisance conditions, and unsafe structures.
  • Issue notices of violation, correction orders, citations, and other enforcement documents as necessary.

Education, Experience and Licenses:
  • Completion of a standard high school course, or equivalent GED program.
  • Minimum of 3 years experience in code enforcement, building inspection, law enforcement, environmental science, civil engineering, or related field.
  • Certification as a Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD) Property Maintenance Official (preferred) or the ability to obtain certification within a designated timeframe.
  • Certification as a Stormwater Inspector and Erosion and Sediment Control Inspector (preferred) or the ability to obtain certification within a designated timeframe.
  • Any combination of education, certification, training, and/or experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Valid driver's license.
