Job description

The Orthopaedic Oncology department at MD Anderson Cancer Center is dedicated to providing state-of-the-art treatment for adults and children with musculoskeletal bone tumors, including osteosarcoma, Ewing's sarcoma, Giant Cell tumors, chondroblastoma, chondrosarcoma, chordoma, and soft tissue sarcomas. Our goal is to maximize the function of each patient with advanced surgical and reconstructive techniques. We also manage orthopaedic problems in oncologic patients, including fractures, arthritis, avascular necrosis and osteoporosis.
The ideal candidate will have Orthopaedic Surgery or Oncology experience.
Join Our Orthopaedic Oncology Surgery Team as an Advanced Practice Provider - Advanced Practice Registered Nurse or Physician Assistant (APRN/PA). Must be open to traveling to Houston Area Locations (HALs).
Shift: Monday - Friday with after hours call responsibilities. Outpatient & Operating Room
Salary Range: Minimum $117,500.00 - Midpoint $146,500.00 - Maximum $176,500.00

Patient Care of the Orthopaedic Oncology Patient
MLP completes History & Physical for patients diagnosed with primary bone or soft tissue tumors or metastatic tumors. Completes preoperative H&P and submits indicated consultation request for medical preoperative evaluation; completes postoperative exam and manages postoperative complications; reviews diagnostic studies and laboratory studies and formulates a differential diagnosis and treatment plan; documents patient encounters by dictating prompt PME, H&P, preoperative & postoperative note; dictates all telephone patient communication; presents patient case history and imaging studies at multidisciplinary conferences & dictates recommendations; submits billing via EPIC within 24 to 48 hours; provide patient education and discusses diagnosis and treatment plan with patient and family; discusses importance of cancer treatment for newly diagnosed patients and discusses the importance of tumor surveillance; Communicates with patient's allied care providers and referring physicians to assist with ongoing outpatient care; Assists Business Centers with obtaining insurance authorization by providing clinical information and completing peer to peer discussion.
Surgical Management of Orthopaedic Oncology Patient
Manages the faculty's surgical schedule; schedules surgical cases. Communicates with multiple surgical services and coordinates multi-surgeon cases; Contacts Bone and Tissue Bank reps for procurement of allografts; Contacts medical device reps and requests prosthesis, instruments, etc needed for surgery; First and second assists in surgery; Submits preoperative and postoperative orders; Communicates with OR staff to coordinate complex cases.
Orthopaedic Oncology On-Call Responsibilities
MLP covers the inpatient and EC after hours while on call. Provides medical management of postoperative patients; Evaluates and manages urgent and emergent problems for orthopedic oncology patients in the inpatient and emergency center; While on-call covers inpatient consults with urgent or emergent orthopedic problems and implements appropriate orthopedic management, surgical and non-surgical intervention; Communicates with the MERIT team, ICU staff and on call consultants for emergent medical problems; Implements appropriate acute care assessments and orders appropriate diagnostic testing, consultation and intervention; Cover the OR after hours and on weekends.

Education
REQUIRED: Degree requirements as defined by the Texas Board of Nursing (BON) or Texas State Board of Physician Assistant Examiners (TSBPAE) as required for clinical licensure as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse or Physician Assistant.
Licensure/Certification
REQUIRED: Written authorization from the Texas Board of Nursing (BON) or Texas State Board of Physician Assistant Examiners (TSBPAE) to function as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse or Physician Assistant. Related authorization must be consistent with clinical practice area and patient population. Basic Life Support (BLS) or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification. MAY BE REQUIRED: Eligible to be granted limited prescriptive authority by the State of Texas.
PREFERRED: American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS), ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) or PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) certification as required by patient care area
EXPERIENCE
Required: None.
Preferred: One year procedural and/or surgical experience, consistent work history.
