What does a projects manager do?

A Projects Manager is responsible for planning, executing, and overseeing projects within an organization to ensure they are completed on time, within scope, and on budget. They coordinate with teams, allocate resources, manage timelines, and communicate with stakeholders to track progress and address any issues that arise. Projects Managers play a key role in ensuring project objectives align with organizational goals and are delivered successfully.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a projects manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Projects Manager, you need strong project management skills, leadership abilities, and a background in business or a related field, often supported by a bachelor's degree or higher. Familiarity with project management software such as Microsoft Project, Asana, or Jira, and certifications like PMP or PRINCE2, are commonly required. Exceptional communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills help you motivate teams and adapt to dynamic project demands. These competencies ensure projects are delivered on time, within scope and budget, and foster a productive, collaborative environment.

How does a projects manager typically balance multiple projects and ensure deadlines are met?

A Projects Manager often oversees several projects simultaneously, which requires strong organizational and prioritization skills. They rely on project management tools, regular progress meetings, and clear communication to track milestones and address potential bottlenecks early. Effective delegation and collaboration with cross-functional teams are also key, as Projects Managers must align resources and expectations while adapting to shifting priorities. This dynamic environment encourages continual learning and offers opportunities to develop leadership and strategic planning abilities.

  • Define project scope, success metrics, timelines, milestones, dependencies, and implementation strategies while managing multiple concurrent initiatives to deliver on business objectives.
  • Serve as the bridge between strategy and execution by aligning business objectives, customer insights, channel requirements, operational needs, and cross-functional stakeholders.
  • Partner with Consumer Insights, Analytics, and Data Science teams to incorporate customer research, behavioral data, audience targeting, predictive models, and performance insights into acquisition strategies.
  • Proactively manage project risks, dependencies, compliance requirements, and execution challenges while communicating project status, key decisions, milestones, and executive-ready updates.
  • Monitor campaign performance and project outcomes to identify optimization opportunities and continuously improve acquisition effectiveness.
  • Drive operational excellence by streamlining workflows, standardizing processes, and building scalable operating models that support future acquisition growth, including Refinance and Early Payoff initiatives.
Key Competencies
  • Results-oriented, highly organized, and able to manage multiple priorities.
  • 5+ years of email, marketing strategy and project management experience, ideally in a business or technology-driven environment.
  • Comfortable partnering with colleagues across levels and functions, as well as external partners/vendors.
  • Analytical and strategic mindset with a strong bias toward testing, learning, and optimization.
  • Adaptable and effective in fast-paced, high-growth environments.
  • Customer-first mindset and passion for driving growth through data and insights.
  • Experience with Atlassian tools (e.g., Jira, Confluence) is a plus.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and written/verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage project plans, resources, and timelines effectively.
  • Ability to learn new business areas quickly and adapt to evolving organizational needs.
  • Takes initiative and thrives in collaborative environments that require teamwork and clear communication.
