What is a project job?

A project job involves working on specific tasks or objectives within a defined timeframe, often as part of a larger initiative. These roles typically require skills in planning, coordination, and problem-solving, and may involve working with project management tools like MS Project or Jira.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a project manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Project Manager, you need strong organizational, leadership, and problem-solving skills, often supported by a relevant degree and experience in project coordination. Familiarity with project management software (such as Microsoft Project, Asana, or Jira) and certifications like PMP or PRINCE2 are highly valued. Exceptional communication, adaptability, and team collaboration abilities set outstanding project managers apart. These skills and qualifications are crucial for ensuring projects are delivered on time, within budget, and to stakeholder expectations.

How do project managers typically balance multiple projects and competing deadlines?

Project managers often oversee several projects simultaneously, requiring strong organizational and prioritization skills. They use project management tools and methodologies like Agile or Waterfall to track progress, allocate resources, and adjust timelines as needed. Effective communication with team members and stakeholders is essential to identify potential bottlenecks early and reassign tasks or shift priorities when necessary. Regular status meetings and updates help ensure everyone remains aligned, making it easier to deliver projects on time and within scope.

What is a project manager?

They coordinate teams, manage resources, set deadlines, and ensure that project goals are achieved on time and within budget. Project Managers communicate with stakeholders, assess risks, and resolve issues that may arise during the project lifecycle. Their role is crucial in ensuring that projects align with business objectives and deliver value.

Job description

At Springtide, a division of IPS (a Berkshire Hathaway company), we listen, understand, and lean into complex challenges to unlock new solutions and realize opportunities with our partners. Distinguished by our agility, creativity, expertise, and owner’s perspective, we deliver faster time-to-market and longer-lasting value, enabling you to do more.

We are seeking a Construction Project Director (Data Centers) to lead the execution of large-scale, hyperscale, mission-critical data center projects located in Southwest Virginia and West Texas

This role is responsible for overseeing all phases of project delivery- from preconstruction through execution and closeout—ensuring successful outcomes across safety, schedule, cost, and quality. The ideal candidate brings deep experience delivering complex, large-scale construction projects within a GC/CM environment and has a proven track record in data center and mission-critical infrastructure.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Lead overall project execution strategy for hyperscale data center construction programs
  • Drive construction execution, sequencing, and site logistics planning
  • Partner closely with preconstruction, procurement, and client teams to ensure seamless project transition into execution
  • Oversee contractor, subcontractor, and vendor performance in a GC/CM environment
  • Oversee project operations, contracts, budgeting, and risk management across the project

  • Holds primary responsibility for the achievement of scope, cost, schedule, and quality objectives on assigned projects.
  • Ensures achievement of corporate goals for assigned projects.
  • Leads project teams of their own or led by others to a successful conclusion.
  • Coordinates construction planning, scope, and scheduling across project teams and stakeholders
  • Drive continuous improvement in construction execution, scheduling, and delivery practices
  • Provides mentorship to all developing individuals within the project management group and the design disciplines.
  • Coordinate with internal departments (Preconstruction, Procurement, Safety, Quality, etc.) for resource allocation and project support.

  • Maintain accountability for revenue targets, profitability, and utilization goals.

  • Lead change management and evaluate project resource needs.

  • Facilitate client communication, site monitoring, and resolution of project non-conformances.

The salary offered for this role is between $190,000 and $290,000, but the actual salary offered is dependent on experience, skill set, and education.

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, Construction Management, or a related discipline (or equivalent experience)
  • 10+ years of experience in Construction Project Delivery
  • Proven experience delivering large-scale data center construction projects
  • Must have hands-on experience delivering projects from the General Contractor (GC) or Construction Manager (CM) side.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and stakeholder management skills
  • This role requires significant travel and full-time onsite presence during construction at remote project locations in West Texas and Southwest Virginia.

Work Environment

  • Project locations include Southwest Virginia and West Texas
  • Full-time onsite presence required during the construction phase
  • Role will be based at active construction sites for extended durations, including remote locations
  • Please review the IPS Travel Policy.
  • Living assistance will be provided and structured based on the duration of the assignment
  • Must have the ability to travel and commute on a daily or routine basis.
  • Must be able to work in both indoor and outdoor environments, which may include exposure to varying weather
  • Must adhere to all site safety requirements and complete required safety training

All interviews are conducted either in person or virtually, with video required.
