Job description

Cornerstone Maintenance
Founded in 1981, NIA Community Services Network is a nonprofit organization dedicated to addressing issues that impact youth, families, and seniors. NIA's mission, to strengthen and empower children, families, and communities through comprehensive programming and vital human services, is evidenced each day through programming that directly supports and enriches the lives of children and families we serve at nearly 50 sites located across many of New York City's most diverse and underserved neighborhoods through after-school programs, summer day camps, cultural arts opportunities, youth and family counseling services, parent workshops, community assistance, referral services, senior support programs, and community events.

Cornerstone Programs are located in NYCHA community centers throughout New York City and provide academic and recreational opportunities for children, teens and adults. The center offers services every weekday from 10:00am to 10:00pm, Saturdays from 10:00am to 5:00pm, and during extended hours during the summer and on school holidays.
The Cornerstone Maintenance person is responsible for maintaining the interior and exterior of the community center building, ensuring a clean and safe environment for staff, participants, and visitors.
Responsibilities:
  • Clean and maintain all indoor spaces including common areas, classrooms, offices, and restrooms on a daily basis.
  • Maintain flooring through regular sweeping and mopping, as well as periodic stripping and waxing.
  • Make minor building repairs according to personal ability; coordinate with carpenters, plumbers, electricians, etc. on any larger-scale projects as needed.
  • Paint and maintain finish of building spaces as needed.
  • Empty wastebaskets daily and manage the disposal of building trash according to weekly schedule.
  • Clear snow from entrances and walkways on snow days.
  • Maintain building exterior, including sweeping and keeping the exterior graffiti-free.
  • Assist with deliveries and with transporting boxes, equipment, and supplies throughout building as needed.
  • Assist with furniture and equipment assembly as needed.
  • Perform routine building inspections, noting any potential concerns with structure, finishes, HVAC, etc. for the Cornerstone Director.
  • Keep inventory of sanitary supplies.
  • If cleaning after-hours, ensure the building is fully secured upon exiting.
  • Follow all applicable safety rules and procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to ensure the success and smooth operation of the Cornerstone program.
  • Schedule: Tuesday-Friday: 6pm-10pm, Saturday: 10am-6pm

Qualifications:
  • Must have previous maintenance experience and familiarity with building mechanics.
  • Must be able to regularly lift up to 50 lbs., able to climb stairs, and be comfortable handling hazardous substances with proper protective equipment.
  • Ability to interact professionally with other staff and participants as needed.
  • Willingness and ability to participate in professional development as needed to acquire necessary skills.
  • Ability to work outdoors occasionally in poor weather conditions, such as snow, cold, or heat.
  • Drivers license preferred but not required.
  • Must be highly organized and detail-oriented.
  • Must be punctual and reliable; Must be available to maintain a full-time work schedule, including weekend and evening hours as needed.
  • Must successfully complete NYC DOH Fingerprinting Screening; New York State Register Clearance
