Is being a TPM a good career?

A Technical Project Manager (TPM) is a valuable role that combines project management skills with technical expertise, often involving managing complex projects in technology environments. It offers opportunities for career growth, skill development in areas like Agile, Scrum, and tools such as Jira or MS Project, and typically provides competitive compensation. The role suits individuals with strong communication, leadership, and technical knowledge who enjoy coordinating teams and delivering technical solutions.

Is an IT project manager the same as a technical project manager?

A technical project manager is a type of project manager who specializes in managing projects that involve complex technical or software development tasks, often requiring technical expertise and familiarity with tools like Agile or Scrum. An IT project manager may oversee a broader range of technology projects, including infrastructure, hardware, and software, but may not always require deep technical knowledge. While the roles can overlap, a technical project manager typically has more hands-on technical skills compared to a general IT project manager.

What is the highest paying project manager?

Senior project managers, especially those in industries like IT, engineering, or construction, tend to have the highest salaries among project management roles. Certifications such as PMP or PgMP, along with extensive experience and managing large-scale projects, can significantly increase earning potential, with top salaries reaching over $150,000 annually in some regions.

What are the 4 types of project managers?

Project managers can be categorized into four main types: functional, project-oriented, matrix, and program managers. Functional managers oversee specific departments, while project managers lead individual projects. Matrix managers work across departments with shared authority, and program managers coordinate related projects to achieve strategic objectives.

How do Technical Project Managers typically balance technical problem-solving with project coordination responsibilities?

Technical Project Managers often juggle both technical and managerial duties, which requires strong prioritization and communication skills. They are responsible for translating business requirements into actionable tasks, troubleshooting technical issues with development teams, and ensuring project milestones are met. Collaboration is key, as they frequently work with software engineers, QA testers, and stakeholders to keep projects on track. Balancing these aspects involves staying organized, delegating technical tasks appropriately, and maintaining open lines of communication with all team members.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Technical Project Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Technical Project Manager, you need a solid understanding of project management methodologies (such as Agile or Waterfall), technical acumen relevant to the industry, and a bachelor’s degree in a related field—often supplemented by certifications like PMP or Scrum Master. Familiarity with tools like Jira, Microsoft Project, and collaboration platforms is critical for planning, tracking, and reporting project progress. Strong leadership, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication set standout professionals apart by enabling them to bridge the gap between technical teams and stakeholders. These skills and qualifications are vital for delivering projects on time, within scope, and ensuring alignment between business objectives and technical solutions.

At BNS, we design, build, and deploy mission-critical infrastructure - from AI data center networks and liquid-cooled GPU systems to medium- and low-voltage power and switchgear for defense, marine, and industrial environments. Our team provides complete lifecycle support, from engineering and manufacturing through field deployment and after-sales service.
BNS offers a competitive and relevant benefits package that keeps our employees in mind. Our benefits package includes medical, dental, and vision coverage, 401(k), and paid time off (PTO).
POSITION OVERVIEW
We are growing and looking for a Technical Project Manager to drive complex infrastructure projects from award through closeout. In this role, you will own scope, schedule, budget, and margin while coordinating engineering, field crews, manufacturing, subcontractors, and vendors across active data center and power projects.
This position offers the opportunity to work closely with engineering, operations, and customer teams - serving as the single point of accountability that keeps multi-trade, multi-site projects on track and on budget. This is a fully remote role and can be based anywhere, with the ability to travel to active project sites as needed.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
  • Own complex infrastructure deployment projects end-to-end - scope, schedule, budget, risk, and margin - from award through commissioning and closeout
  • Coordinate engineering, field crews, manufacturing, subcontractors, and vendors across multiple trades and sites
  • Build and maintain project schedules, budgets, and resource plans, and report status to internal leadership and customers
  • Manage the documentation discipline - submittals, RFIs, change orders, issued-for-construction releases, and commissioning records
  • Run change control and scope management, protecting margin while keeping the customer relationship strong
  • Coordinate material procurement and logistics, including long-lead equipment and cross-border shipments where required
  • Drive commissioning, hand-off, and after-sales / hypercare support in partnership with the field and engineering teams
  • Track project performance against contract requirements and customer commitments, and drive corrective action when projects drift

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR
  • 10+ years of experience managing technical infrastructure, construction, electrical, or data center deployment projects
  • Demonstrated ability to manage scope, schedule, budget, and margin on complex, multi-stakeholder projects
  • Experience coordinating field crews, subcontractors, and vendors across multiple trades
  • Strong command of project documentation - submittals, RFIs, change orders, and commissioning
  • Excellent organization, communication, and stakeholder-management skills
  • Ability to collaborate across engineering, manufacturing, operations, and customer teams
  • Willingness to travel to project sites (estimated 25-50%)

EXPERIENCE IN THE FOLLOWING AREAS IS A PLUS
  • Data center or AI infrastructure deployment - structured cabling, fiber, liquid cooling, or GPU systems
  • Electrical or power systems projects - switchgear, MV/LV distribution, or marine and defense
  • PMP, CAPM, or equivalent project management certification
  • Scheduling and PM tooling - MS Project, Primavera P6, Smartsheet, or Zoho Projects
  • Experience with cross-border logistics or international project delivery

WHY JOIN BNS?
At BNS, you'll work alongside a team that values ownership, execution, and technical depth. Our project managers sit at the center of everything we deliver - keeping complex, high-stakes projects moving across data center and power infrastructure.
If you are passionate about delivering complex infrastructure projects and solving hard logistical and technical challenges, we encourage you to apply.
BNS is an Equal Opportunity Employer (EEO).
