Project Manager Job Description

Position Title: Project Manager

Reports To: President / Operations Manager

Position Summary

The Project Manager is responsible for the overall planning, coordination, execution, and financial performance of construction projects from contract award through final completion. The Project Manager serves as the primary point of contact for owners, engineers, subcontractors, suppliers, and field personnel, ensuring projects are completed safely, on schedule, within budget, and in accordance with contract requirements.

Given Shaw Construction's focus on municipal utility, pump station, and infrastructure projects, the Project Manager is expected to effectively manage complex civil construction projects while maintaining strong client relationships and maximizing project profitability.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Project Management

  • Manage multiple construction projects simultaneously from award through closeout.
  • Review project contracts, plans, specifications, and bid documents.
  • Develop project budgets, schedules, and resource plans.
  • Coordinate project startup meetings and establish project objectives.
  • Monitor project progress and implement corrective actions as necessary.
  • Ensure compliance with all contract requirements and project specifications.
  • Oversee project documentation and recordkeeping.

Financial Management

  • Develop and maintain project cost reports.
  • Monitor labor, equipment, material, and subcontractor costs.
  • Review and approve vendor invoices and subcontractor pay applications.
  • Prepare monthly owner pay applications.
  • Manage project cash flow and billing schedules.
  • Identify and pursue change order opportunities.
  • Forecast project profitability and provide monthly projections.
  • Ensure timely collection of accounts receivable.

Client Relations

  • Serve as the primary liaison with owners, engineers, inspectors, and consultants.
  • Attend project meetings and represent Shaw Construction professionally.

Field Operations Support

  • Coordinate with Superintendents and Foremen to ensure efficient project execution.

  • Conduct regular site visits to monitor project status.

Subcontractor and Vendor Management

  • Solicit and evaluate subcontractor and supplier quotations.

  • Coordinate subcontractor scheduling and performance.
  • Ensure vendors and subcontractors meet contract requirements and insurance obligations.

Contract Administration

  • Manage project correspondence and documentation.
  • Review and process Requests for Information (RFIs).
  • Prepare and negotiate change orders.
  • Maintain project schedules and updates.
  • Track permits, inspections, and regulatory requirements.
  • Coordinate project closeout documentation.

Safety and Compliance

  • Promote and enforce company safety policies.
  • Ensure projects comply with OSHA regulations and company safety standards.

  • Support a culture of safety throughout all project activities.

Business Development Support

  • Assist with estimating handoffs and project transitions.

Required Qualifications

Education

Experience

  • Experience managing municipal utility, water/wastewater, pump station, sitework, or heavy civil infrastructure projects preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience managing projects ranging from $500,000 to $10,000,000+.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Strong understanding of construction contracts and project administration.
  • Ability to read and interpret plans, specifications, and technical documents.
  • Knowledge of project scheduling techniques and software.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and construction management software.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to travel to job sites throughout Southeastern Virginia and surrounding areas.
