Project Manager H1B information

What is a Project Manager H1B?

A Project Manager H1B refers to a project management professional who is employed in the United States under the H-1B visa program. The H-1B visa allows U.S. employers to temporarily employ foreign workers in specialty occupations requiring specialized knowledge and a bachelor's degree or higher. Project Managers on H-1B visas typically oversee projects, manage teams, and ensure that project goals are met within specified timelines and budgets. They may work in a variety of industries such as IT, construction, engineering, or healthcare. Employers must sponsor the H-1B visa, and the process involves meeting eligibility requirements set by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a project manager on an H1B visa?

To thrive as a Project Manager, you typically need a bachelor’s degree in a relevant field, experience in project planning and execution, and strong organizational skills. Familiarity with project management software such as Microsoft Project, Jira, or Asana, and certification like PMP or Scrum Master are often required. Exceptional communication, leadership, and problem-solving abilities help project managers motivate teams and resolve challenges. These competencies are essential to deliver projects successfully, meet stakeholder expectations, and drive organizational goals within a diverse workplace.

What are some common challenges faced by project managers working under an H1B visa, and how can they be addressed?

Project Managers on H1B visas often encounter challenges such as adapting to different workplace cultures, managing cross-functional teams with diverse backgrounds, and ensuring compliance with both company policies and visa regulations. Building strong communication skills and proactively seeking feedback can help in managing multicultural teams more effectively. Additionally, staying informed about H1B compliance requirements and collaborating closely with HR can minimize administrative hurdles, allowing you to focus on delivering project outcomes. Many organizations also offer mentorship and training programs that can support professional growth and integration into the team.

Job Description

Johnson, Mirmiran & Thompson is a dynamic, 100% employee-owned consulting firm with more than 2,800 professionals, providing a full range of multidisciplinary engineering, architecture, information technology, and related services to public agencies and private clients throughout the United States. JMT is currently ranked #45 on Engineering News-Record's list of the Top 500 Design Firms.

About Us

Our SUE team is known for technical rigor and trusted relationships with clients-and we're looking for a seasoned project manager to help lead its next chapter. This role offers genuine leadership responsibility, exposure to complex high-profile projects, and a clear path toward senior and principal-level advancement.

Position Summary: The SUE Project Manager will lead utility investigations across a portfolio of transportation and infrastructure projects. You'll own projects from proposal through final deliverables, managing field crews, client relationships, and technical quality in accordance with ASCE 38 standards (Quality Levels A, B, C, & D). This is a hands-on leadership role-you'll mentor staff, shape workflows, and serve as the technical point of contact for clients and design partners.

Immigration sponsorship or support (e.g. H1B, F-1 CPT/OPT/STEM OPT) is not available for this position, except for qualified candidates eligible for the TN visa classification.

Compensation for this position is $85,000.00 - $145,000.00/annually, commensurate with experience, education and certifications. The provided range is a good faith estimate based on the requirements described within the job description. We notice that we receive a wide variety of applicants and recognize that the person selected may be less experienced or more experienced. If so, the actual salary range may vary from the estimate provided.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Manage SUE projects end-to-end: scopes, schedules, budgets, and final deliverables
  • Lead or contribute to proposal development and client presentations
  • Oversee utility designation and test hole operations in the field
  • Ensure compliance with ASCE 38 and industry best practices across all work products
  • Coordinate with engineers, survey teams, and utility owners throughout project lifecycle
  • Implement and enforce QA/QC procedures for field data and CAD deliverables
  • Ability to read and interpret utility company records/plans
  • Possess and maintain utility records contacts for records research
  • Review utility mapping for accuracy and continuity
  • Mentor and develop SUE technicians and junior project staff
  • Prepare technical reports
  • Manage multiple SUE crews and subcontractors across concurrent projects
