What is a project management contractor?

Project Management Contractors are professionals hired on a temporary basis to oversee and manage specific projects within an organization. They are responsible for planning, executing, and closing projects, ensuring that goals are met on time and within budget. Unlike full-time employees, they typically work on contract for the duration of a project and may manage multiple projects for different clients. Their expertise helps organizations complete projects efficiently without the long-term commitment of a permanent hire.

What is the difference between Project Management Contractor vs Project Coordinator?

AspectProject Management ContractorProject Coordinator
CredentialsPM certifications (PMP, CAPM), relevant experienceTypically a bachelor's degree, some certifications (CAPM)
Work EnvironmentContract basis, often freelance or temporary projectsFull-time or part-time in organizations, supporting project teams

While both roles support project execution, a Project Management Contractor is hired temporarily to lead or manage projects independently, often with specialized certifications. A Project Coordinator typically assists project managers by handling administrative tasks and coordinating activities within ongoing projects. The contractor role is more autonomous and results-driven, whereas the coordinator provides essential support within a team environment.

What are some common challenges faced by project management contractors and how can they be effectively addressed?

Project Management Contractors often face the challenge of quickly adapting to new organizational cultures and project teams, as they typically work on a contract basis for diverse clients. Building trust and clear communication with stakeholders in a short time frame is crucial. To address these challenges, it's important to establish clear expectations early, maintain transparent documentation, and leverage strong interpersonal skills to integrate smoothly with existing teams. Additionally, staying organized and adaptable helps contractors manage shifting project scopes and timelines effectively.

Job description

OVERVIEW
Better Together works to end the root causes of poverty, dependency, divorce and child abuse by leveraging the power of the local church to provide struggling families with supportive relationships and meaningful work. Once properly supported, families can achieve independence, stay together and thrive.
Better Together is seeking a Marketing Project Manager who will oversee and execute multiple marketing initiatives, ensuring all deliverables align with strategic goals, timelines, and quality standards. This role combines project management expertise with a deep understanding of digital and field marketing, requiring strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills. As the key coordinator across internal teams, contractors, and stakeholders, the Marketing Project Manager will drive efficiency, foster collaboration, and provide actionable insights to optimize outcomes and support Better Together's mission.
CULTURE AND FIT
The people who consistently succeed at Better Together are those whose actions and behavior reflect our five core values. If you adhere to these values and answer "yes" to each of these questions, you may be a fit.
  1. Owner's Mindset: You are invested in the outcomes of our mission.
  1. Are you a self-starter who is able to take initiative in order to complete a task?
  2. Do you often seek opportunities for professional growth?
  1. Choosing Gratitude: There are many things in life that can make us upset. Every day we have a choice to either be negative or give thanks.
  1. Do you often go out of your way to help others?
  2. Have you written a thank-you card in the last 30 days?
  3. Are you a positive person who is more focused on opportunities instead of obstacles?
  1. Love Others: We aim to love others like Christ loves us. Our hope is that our lives would be filled and overflowing with love, so that we can make a difference in this world.
  1. Do people often say you are a good listener?
  2. Do you make decisions based on what's best for others over yourself?
  3. Do you often find yourself looking for ways to make others feel empowered, important and appreciated?
  1. Partnership-Oriented: Internal and external relationships are not transactional. That starts with our team members and the perspective that we need the rest of the team to succeed in order to win personally.
  1. Are you comfortable creating your own structure for work, such as setting work hours, your own priorities, and creating clarity and a work plan from a broad goal?
  2. Do you tend to be the one who initiates conversations with colleagues, rather than waiting for them to come to you?
  1. The Sky is the Limit: We have a big vision at Better Together. No one on our team is counting hours or widgets. We are here to get results, and sometimes that will require going the extra mile or doing a job that isn't technically ours.
  1. Do you often set yourself audacious goals?
  2. Do you wholeheartedly agree with our principles, which include that people's lives are made better through work and that we can and will end the foster care crisis?

The vast majority of those who don't get hired (or don't last) at Better Together lack a fit with these values. Be prepared to have very candid conversations about them in our interview process.
