What does a Project Financial Controller do?

A Project Financial Controller is responsible for overseeing and managing the financial aspects of specific projects within an organization. They monitor project budgets, track expenses, prepare financial reports, and ensure that projects are delivered within the allocated financial resources. Their role also includes forecasting costs, identifying financial risks, and advising project managers on financial matters to support successful project delivery.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Project Financial Controller, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Project Financial Controller, you need a strong background in finance, budgeting, and project accounting, usually supported by a degree in finance or accounting and relevant experience. Familiarity with ERP systems, project management software, and financial reporting tools, as well as certifications like CPA or CMA, are commonly required. Exceptional analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication help you collaborate across teams and ensure financial compliance. These skills are vital for accurate financial oversight, risk management, and supporting successful project delivery within budgetary constraints.

How does a Project Financial Controller typically collaborate with project managers and other departments to ensure budget adherence?

A Project Financial Controller works closely with project managers and cross-functional teams to track project expenses, forecast costs, and flag potential budget overruns early. They facilitate regular financial reviews, provide detailed reporting, and offer guidance on cost optimization. Effective communication and collaboration are key, as controllers must translate financial data into actionable insights for non-financial stakeholders, helping the project stay on track and within financial targets.

Financial Controller

Location: North Canton, OH
Job Type: Full-Time
Compensation: Approximately $100,000+, depending on experience

About CKP Heating & Cooling

CKP Heating & Cooling is a family-owned and operated HVAC company based in North Canton, Ohio. CKP serves residential and commercial customers and provides heating, cooling, refrigeration, building automation, ductwork, replacements, repairs, preventative maintenance, and new construction support. The company's public messaging highlights hands-on leadership, fast decision-making, craftsmanship, reliability, and a customer-first approach.

Position Overview

CKP is seeking a Financial Controller to build and lead a stronger in-house accounting function as the company continues to grow. This is a high-impact leadership role for someone who can own the financial backbone of the business while partnering closely with ownership and operations.

The ideal candidate will bring strong accounting discipline, construction or trades-related financial experience, and the ability to turn job data into useful business insight. This person will not simply close the books. They will help leadership understand margins, job performance, cash flow, and the financial health of the company across service, installation, and project work. This role is especially important in a business like CKP, where leadership is hands-on and decisions are made quickly.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead all core accounting and financial reporting functions for the company
  • Prepare accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements
  • Manage general ledger activity, account reconciliations, and month-end close
  • Oversee cash flow, budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning
  • Develop and maintain internal controls, policies, and reporting procedures
  • Monitor job costing, labor burden, materials usage, subcontractor costs, and overall project profitability
  • Maintain and analyze work-in-progress (WIP) schedules and support appropriate revenue recognition
  • Deliver reporting and insight on departmental performance across residential service, commercial work, installation, maintenance, and project-based operations
  • Partner with ownership and operational leaders to identify trends, margin improvement opportunities, and cost overruns
  • Support inventory and asset accountability across warehouse, equipment, and vehicle/truck stock environments
  • Oversee payroll-related accounting, including overtime, commissions, incentive structures, or technician-related compensation where applicable
  • Coordinate with outside tax, audit, and compliance partners as needed while helping reduce reliance on outsourced day-to-day accounting support
  • Help build an accounting function that is timely, accurate, practical, and scalable for a growing HVAC company
What We're Looking For
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
  • 5+ years of progressive accounting or finance experience, ideally including leadership responsibility
  • Prior experience in HVAC, construction, home services, field services, or a related trades-based business strongly preferred
  • Strong understanding of job costing, WIP, revenue recognition, and operational finance
  • Experience producing financial statements and management reporting for owner-led businesses
  • High level of accuracy, accountability, and follow-through
  • Ability to communicate financial information clearly to non-financial leaders
  • Comfort working in a fast-moving, hands-on environment where collaboration with ownership and operations is expected
  • ERP or accounting software experience; experience with field-service or construction-oriented systems is a plus
  • CPA, CMA, or equivalent advanced credential is a plus, but not required
Why This Role Matters

At CKP, leadership is directly involved in the business and focused on delivering quality service without corporate red tape. This role is designed for a Controller who wants a seat at the table and the ability to directly influence how the company measures performance, improves profitability, and supports long-term growth. The right candidate will bring financial clarity to a business built on service, craftsmanship, and customer trust.

Compensation and Work Environment

This is a full-time, in-office leadership position based in North Canton, Ohio. Compensation is expected to be in the $100,000 range or higher depending on experience. CKP's careers messaging also emphasizes a supportive team environment, long-term growth, and competitive benefits.
