What does a project financial controller do?

A Project Financial Controller is responsible for overseeing and managing the financial aspects of specific projects within an organization. They monitor project budgets, track expenses, prepare financial reports, and ensure that projects are delivered within the allocated financial resources. Their role also includes forecasting costs, identifying financial risks, and advising project managers on financial matters to support successful project delivery.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a project financial controller, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Project Financial Controller, you need a strong background in finance, budgeting, and project accounting, usually supported by a degree in finance or accounting and relevant experience. Familiarity with ERP systems, project management software, and financial reporting tools, as well as certifications like CPA or CMA, are commonly required. Exceptional analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication help you collaborate across teams and ensure financial compliance. These skills are vital for accurate financial oversight, risk management, and supporting successful project delivery within budgetary constraints.

How does a project financial controller typically collaborate with project managers and other departments to ensure budget adherence?

A Project Financial Controller works closely with project managers and cross-functional teams to track project expenses, forecast costs, and flag potential budget overruns early. They facilitate regular financial reviews, provide detailed reporting, and offer guidance on cost optimization. Effective communication and collaboration are key, as controllers must translate financial data into actionable insights for non-financial stakeholders, helping the project stay on track and within financial targets.

Job description

Job Type
Full-time
Description
Join ENTEK in Terre Haute, Indiana
ENTEK is excited to welcome a Financial Controller to our team in Terre Haute, Indiana. This is more than a traditional Controller role-it's a unique opportunity to build the financial foundation for one of North America's largest battery separator manufacturing facilities.
If you're energized by creating processes from the ground up, partnering with manufacturing leaders, and building a high-performing finance organization during a major facility startup, this is an opportunity to make a lasting impact.
As the Financial Controller, you'll serve as the senior finance leader for our newest manufacturing operation, partnering closely with Operations, Engineering, Supply Chain, IT, Project Management, and Corporate Finance to establish scalable financial processes that will support the facility for years to come. You'll help transform a manufacturing startup into a world-class operation while building and developing the accounting team that will support future growth.
What You'll Do
As the Financial Controller, you'll provide both strategic financial leadership and hands-on operational support during plant commissioning, startup, and ongoing manufacturing operations.
In this role, you will:
  • Build and lead the accounting and finance organization as the facility grows
  • Recruit, develop, mentor, and inspire a high-performing accounting team
  • Establish scalable accounting policies, procedures, internal controls, and financial reporting processes
  • Design and implement month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes
  • Develop KPIs, dashboards, and operational reporting that provide meaningful business insights to plant leadership
  • Partner with Corporate Accounting to ensure compliance with U.S. GAAP, company policies, and internal controls
  • Lead all manufacturing accounting activities, including standard costing, inventory valuation, labor and overhead absorption, and manufacturing cost analysis
  • Develop and maintain product costing methodologies while ensuring accurate cost allocation and financial reporting
  • Analyze manufacturing variances, inventory performance, labor efficiency, material usage, and operational trends to identify opportunities for cost reduction and profitability improvement
  • Lead budgeting, forecasting, financial modeling, and strategic planning activities
  • Perform customer profitability, pricing, gross margin, and price-volume-mix analyses
  • Support capital investment decisions and long-range operational planning
  • Develop inventory accounting processes, cost center structures, and physical inventory programs
  • Establish financial processes supporting construction-in-progress (CIP), capital projects, and production reporting
  • Lead ERP implementation, financial configuration, testing, and process optimization
  • Build internal control documentation and standardized financial workflows
  • Support factory commissioning, operational readiness, and production startup activities
  • Partner with Operations, Engineering, Supply Chain, Sales, Human Resources, and executive leadership to drive business performance
  • Lead continuous improvement initiatives focused on automation, operational excellence, and financial process optimization
  • Support tax incentive programs, audits, compliance activities, and manufacturing finance initiatives

Requirements
What We're Looking For
We're seeking a collaborative finance leader who enjoys building organizations-not simply maintaining existing ones. This is an ideal opportunity for someone who thrives in startup environments, enjoys solving complex business challenges, and wants to help shape the future of a rapidly growing manufacturing operation.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field
  • Seven (7) or more years of progressive accounting experience, preferably in manufacturing
  • Strong background in manufacturing accounting, cost accounting, standard costing, inventory accounting, budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis
  • Experience leading month-end close and financial reporting processes
  • Demonstrated success partnering with manufacturing and operational leadership
  • Experience developing financial models and providing strategic business analysis
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills
  • Proven ability to lead teams and build strong cross-functional relationships

Preferred Qualifications
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA)
  • Experience with Microsoft Dynamics AX, Microsoft Dynamics 365, SAP, Oracle, or similar ERP platforms
  • Experience leading ERP implementations or manufacturing finance transformation initiatives
  • Experience supporting multiple operating entities and intercompany accounting
  • Public accounting experience
  • Experience supporting manufacturing startups, greenfield facilities, plant expansions, or large capital projects
  • Experience developing finance organizations, internal controls, and scalable accounting processes from the ground up

Why This Opportunity Is Different
This isn't simply an opportunity to manage an existing accounting department.
You'll help build the finance organization that supports one of ENTEK's largest manufacturing investments. You'll establish accounting processes before production begins, develop reporting frameworks that guide operational decisions, implement financial systems that scale with the business, and build a team that will support the facility's long-term success.
If you enjoy creating, improving, and building rather than maintaining the status quo, this is the kind of opportunity that comes along only a few times in a career.
Your Work Schedule
This is a full-time, exempt position based on-site in Terre Haute, Indiana, working Monday through Friday. Additional hours may occasionally be required during month-end close, ERP implementation, production startup, and other key business initiatives.
What Makes ENTEK Different
ENTEK is more than a manufacturing company-we're a team driven by values. Our core DNA is built on:
  • Respect - valuing each person and every contribution
  • Integrity - doing what's right, always
  • Innovation - pushing boundaries with creativity and technology

When you join ENTEK, you're not just taking a job-you're becoming part of a company that's shaping the future of advanced battery technology while investing in your growth and success.
