Job description

CTL|Thompson, Inc. is seeking a Project Engineer for full-time employment with our Bozeman, MT office. The Project Engineer will work on managing and completing complex design projects primarily involved with commercial, residential, and municipal structures. They will be responsible for planning, analyzing, and designing geotechnical components of a project, as well as providing support for construction observation and materials testing services. This may include performing field inspections, coordinating and managing field projects, reviewing daily inspection reports, evaluating field and laboratory test results, and communicating observations and recommendations to clients, contractors, and project teams. They will use relevant software to perform engineering analysis and develop plans and reports. Project Engineers are required to have a PE license or the ability to obtain it within 6 months of employment and will review project recommendations and designs.

Project Engineers are paid an annual salary between $80,000.00 and $100,000.00 plus discretionary bonuses. Our full-time employees enjoy paid vacation and paid sick time as well as a generous benefits package which includes medical, life and long term disability insurances. Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Train and supervise staff engineers and field engineering technicians.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Provide direct engineering service and project management with full understanding of, and consistent use of, in-house project management tools and the ability to successfully delegate project responsibilities to other staff.
  • Support and manage construction observation and materials testing (COMT) services, including coordination of field staff, project schedules, testing needs, and communication with clients, contractors, and project teams.
  • Train, mentor, and provide technical guidance to staff engineers and field engineering technicians performing COMT-related work.
  • Perform field inspections and construction observations to evaluate conformance with project plans, specifications, geotechnical recommendations, and applicable standards.
  • Review daily field reports, inspection documentation, and materials testing results for completeness, accuracy, and consistency with project requirements.
  • Perform engineering analysis on residential, commercial, and municipal projects to provide project recommendations to clients.
  • Use relevant software to aid with project analysis.
  • Collaborate with other engineers and architects to develop coordinated designs.
  • Conduct studies involving geotechnical investigations for foundations, slope stability, pavement design and earth retention.
  • Perform testing and sampling on various geotechnical materials.
  • Prepare project documentation including plans, reports and letter for clients.
  • Log borings for geotechnical studies.
  • Perform and review field and lab tests for use in engineering analysis and reports.
  • Plan field and subsurface investigations.
  • Create, prepare and update project proposals and technical reports.
  • Review and stamp recommendations, calculations, reports, letters, and plans created by staff engineers for delivery to clients.
  • Create and maintain client relationships.
  • Attend project meetings.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Excellent verbal, interpersonal, and written communication skills.

Education and Experience:

  • B.S. in Civil or related engineering field, M.S. preferred.
  • At least 5 years of experience within specified field.
  • Current Professional Engineer License in the state of employment or ability to obtain a license in 6 months of employment.
  • Licensure in other states as required.

Work Environment:

This job operates in both an outside field environment, laboratory and in an office setting with regular and reliable attendance. Regular work on computers while in the office. While working in the field, will be exposed to extreme weather conditions, including rain, snow, cold and heat. Routinely uses PPE and other safety equipment. Work will primarily be project focused but client interactions will be required.ย 

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds at times.
  • Ability to walk around constructions sites with uneven and varying terrain.
  • Ability to work outside in all weather conditions.ย
