What is a project engineer project manager?

A Project Engineer Project Manager is a professional who combines technical engineering expertise with project management skills to oversee and deliver engineering projects. They are responsible for planning, coordinating, and executing projects from conception through completion, ensuring they meet quality, budget, and timeline requirements. This role involves collaborating with engineers, contractors, and stakeholders, as well as managing resources, schedules, and risks. Project Engineer Project Managers act as a bridge between technical teams and management, ensuring that project objectives align with organizational goals.

How does a project engineer project manager balance technical tasks with leadership responsibilities on a project?

Project Engineer Project Managers are often required to oversee both the technical execution and overall coordination of a project. This means they must allocate time for hands-on engineering tasks, such as reviewing designs or resolving technical issues, while also managing schedules, budgets, and communication with stakeholders. Effective candidates use strong organizational skills and delegation, relying on their team’s expertise for technical details while focusing on big-picture management and client relations. Balancing these aspects is crucial for ensuring project success within scope, time, and cost constraints.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a project engineer project manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Project Engineer Project Manager, you need a solid background in engineering principles, project management methodologies, and a relevant degree, often supported by certifications like PMP or PE. Familiarity with project management software (such as MS Project or Primavera), CAD tools, and budgeting systems is typically required. Strong leadership, problem-solving, and communication skills are essential for effectively managing teams and stakeholders. These skills ensure projects are delivered on time, within scope, and meet quality and safety standards.

What is the difference between Project Engineer Project Manager vs Construction Supervisor?

AspectProject EngineerConstruction Supervisor

Work EnvironmentOffice-based with site visits; involved in planning and coordinationPrimarily on-site overseeing daily construction activities
Employer & Industry UsageEngineering firms, construction companies, project management firmsConstruction companies, general contractors

While both roles are integral to construction projects, Project Engineers focus on planning, design, and technical coordination, often working closely with engineers and project managers. Construction Supervisors oversee daily on-site operations, ensuring safety and adherence to plans. The Project Engineer typically handles technical aspects, whereas the Construction Supervisor manages on-site execution.

Can a project engineer become a project manager?

A project engineer can become a project manager by gaining experience in project planning, leadership, and communication skills. Earning certifications such as PMP or CAPM can also facilitate the transition, as well as developing a broader understanding of project scope, budgets, and schedules. Many project managers start as project engineers before advancing to management roles.

Who gets paid more, a project manager or a project engineer?

Typically, a project manager earns a higher salary than a project engineer due to greater responsibilities in planning, budgeting, and overseeing projects. Project managers often have more experience, certifications like PMP, and leadership skills, which contribute to their higher compensation.

The Impact You'll Make

The Project Engineer is responsible for leading cross‑functional projects to launch new products, provide production support, and drive process improvements to enhance Safety, Quality, Delivery, and Cost. This role will lead capital projects and have responsibility for processes involving automated/semi‑automated lines and MES systems for both assembly lines and test stands. Key activities include performing production releases (including PPAPs) for new product launches, using root‑cause problem‑solving techniques to improve First Pass Yield (FPY) and reduce scrap, and applying lean manufacturing tools to boost productivity. This position reports to the Manufacturing Engineering Manager.

What You’ll Be Doing
  • Production Support & Process Improvement:
  • Provide daily troubleshooting and support to the shop floor, using advanced quality tools to resolve manufacturing issues.
  • Lead special projects focused on overcoming manufacturing problems, applying lean manufacturing concepts to enhance efficiency and output.
  • Use interdisciplinary tools such as 8D Problem Solving and Value Stream Mapping to find and implement cost‑effective solutions.
  • New Product Introduction & Launch:
  • Champion the release‑to‑production process for new products, including performing Production Part Approval Processes (PPAPs).
  • Lead the Design for Manufacturability and Assembly (DFM&A) process to ensure new designs are optimized for production.
  • Develop and manage project schedules, coordinating with Operations, Quality, Engineering, and Supply Chain to ensure a smooth launch.
  • Process Engineering & Documentation:
  • Prepare and maintain essential documentation such as standard work, process flow diagrams, time studies, Process FMEAs, capability studies, and control plans.
  • Determine the optimal sequence of operations needed to meet manufacturing, quality, and cost targets.
  • Specify, develop, and implement the tooling, equipment, and automation necessary to manufacture products effectively.
  • Capital Project Management:
  • Identify capital equipment requirements and prepare Return on Investment (ROI) calculations to justify expenditures.
  • Create annual capital budgets, manage investment projects from conception to completion, and monitor spending against the plan.
  • Supplier & Quality Management:
  • Work with Procurement to ensure supplier processes and parts are sufficiently qualified for a smooth launch into Danfoss manufacturing.
  • Facilitate the implementation of new process developments and equipment purchases in collaboration with internal teams.
What We're Looking For
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Manufacturing, Mechanical, Industrial, or a related field).
  • Experience: 3-5 years of experience in a project, manufacturing, or quality engineering role within a production environment.
  • Technical Skills:
  • Experience with automated or semi‑automated production lines and Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES).
  • Strong knowledge of quality and problem‑solving tools (8D, PPAP, FMEA, Control Plans, VSM).
  • Proficiency in project management and experience managing capital projects.
  • Familiarity with CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD, Siemens NX).
What You’ll Get from Us
  • We promote from within and support your learning with mentoring, training, and access to global opportunities.
  • You’ll have flexibility, autonomy, and support to do your best work while maintaining a healthy work‑life balance. Your well‑being matters to us.
  • We strive to create an inclusive work environment where people of all backgrounds are respected, and valued for who they are.
  • You’ll receive benefits like 13th salary, annual bonus, paid vacation, pension plans, personal insurance, and more. These vary by country and contract, but they’re worth asking about—we think they’re pretty great.

All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, disability, veteran status, or other protected category.
