Position Overview

The Distribution Engineer I supports the design, planning, and management of electrical distribution systems that deliver reliable power to residential, commercial, and industrial customers. This role plays a key part in ensuring safe, efficient, and compliant operation of overhead and underground distribution infrastructure.

The ideal candidate has a strong foundation in electrical engineering principles, power systems analysis, and a commitment to safety and system reliability.

Key Responsibilities

Distribution System Design

  • Design and plan electrical distribution systems including overhead and underground lines
  • Support substation, transformer, and protective device integration
  • Ensure compliance with industry standards and regulatory requirements

Network & System Analysis

  • Perform load flow, fault, and voltage drop analysis
  • Assess system capacity and performance
  • Identify and mitigate potential reliability or capacity issues

Asset & Equipment Management

  • Maintain accurate records of distribution system assets
  • Conduct condition assessments and recommend maintenance or upgrades
  • Specify and select equipment such as transformers, switches, and protective devices

Reliability & Performance Improvement

  • Identify opportunities to improve system reliability and power quality
  • Support grid resilience and system hardening initiatives
  • Analyze data from monitoring systems, smart grids, and sensors

Customer & Project Support

  • Evaluate new service connection requests and assess system impact
  • Design infrastructure modifications to support growth
  • Manage projects from planning through execution
  • Coordinate with construction crews, contractors, and vendors

Emergency & Outage Response

  • Support rapid assessment and restoration efforts during outages
  • Develop solutions to restore service safely and efficiently

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in Electrical Engineering or related field
  • Knowledge of electrical distribution principles and grid operations
  • Understanding of protection systems and distribution equipment
  • Familiarity with regulatory standards and industry codes
  • Proficiency with CAD tools and distribution system design software
  • Exposure to GIS systems preferred

Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license or progress toward licensure
