MechanicalSME, Data Centers

As a Mechanical Subject Matter Expert (SME) at JLL, you will serve as the technical authority and strategic advisor for complex mechanical systems acrossa large hyperscale data center. This specialized role demands deepexpertisein HVAC design, mechanical system optimization, and advanced building technologies while providing consultative support to engineering teams, clients, and project stakeholders. You will lead technical assessments, drive innovation initiatives, andestablishbest practices that enhance system performance, energy efficiency, and operational reliability across multiple facility types.

What your day-to-day will look like:

Critical Systems Management:

  • Oversee HVAC, electrical, and plumbing systems specific to data center operations

  • Implementandmaintaincriticalenvironment protocols and Method of Procedure (MOP) processes

  • Conduct regular performance analyses of facility mechanical and electrical systems

Mechanical Engineering Applications:

  • Apply mechanical engineering principles to improve data center efficiency and reliability

  • Design and implement coolingsolutionsoptimizedforhigh-density server environments

  • Analyze and enhance airflow management strategies

Preventive Maintenance and Troubleshooting:

  • Develop and execute comprehensive preventive maintenance schedules for all critical infrastructure

  • Lead root cause analysis for any system failures or inefficiencies

  • Implement corrective actions and system upgrades based on engineering assessments

Incident Management

  • Be the first point of contact forservice impacting events involving the mechanical plant.

  • Assistthe team in troubleshooting andmitigatingincidents.

  • Assistin the creation of root cause analysis (RCAs).

  • Be available forafter-hourssupportregardingthemechanical plant.

  • Thisincludes24x7response.

Energy Efficiency and Sustainability:

  • Propose and implement energy-saving initiatives to reduce Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE)

  • Evaluate and integrate green technologies suitable for data center operations

Compliance and Safety:

  • Ensure adherence to industry standards (e.g., ASHRAE, ISO) and local regulations

  • Oversee safety protocols and conduct regular safety audits

  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of data center best practices and emerging technologies

Team Leadership and Project Management:

  • Mentor and guide a team of facility technicians and engineers

  • Manage complex data center infrastructure projects, including expansions and upgrades

Vendor and Stakeholder Management:

  • Collaborate with equipment vendors and service providers toensureoptimalsystemperformance

  • Communicate effectively with executive management on infrastructure status and improvement plans

Physical work requirements and work conditions

  • Lifting upto 80 lbs.

  • Working from heights.

  • Frequently climbing, bending, lifting, kneeling, stooping, and working/extending overhead.

  • Working in adverse conditions (i.e., extreme cold, extreme hot).

  • Driving forlong periodsof time.

  • Climbing a ladder with a300lbweightlimit while carrying a tool bag weighing approximately 20 lbs.

  • Climbing a ladder up to 30 feet.

  • Must be available for Call-in work and perform other duties asrequired.

Desired experience and technical skills -

Required:

  • 4+ years of technical experience in building engineering with a strong background in HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and production equipment repair and maintenance

  • Experience working in Data Centers/Raised Floor Environment

  • Strong customer service and interpersonal skills

  • Universal EPA 608 Certification

  • CRAC (Liebert) maintenance and repair experience

  • Licenses as required by authorityhavingjurisdiction

  • Working knowledge of computer applications including Word and Excel

  • 2 years of trades school or documented apprenticeship in relevant craft skills

  • Valid driver's license

Preferred:

  • Expertisein one specific craft area (Electrical, HVAC, Piping/Plumbing, Central Utility Plant Operations, Material Handling Equipment)

  • Familiarity with building automation systems and fire/life safety
