Project Engineer Engineer information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Project Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Project Engineer, you need a solid background in engineering principles, project management, and typically a bachelor's degree in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with CAD software, project management tools like MS Project or Primavera, and relevant certifications such as PMP are often required. Strong problem-solving, communication, and leadership skills help manage teams and coordinate with stakeholders effectively. These abilities are crucial for delivering projects on time, within budget, and to required specifications.

What are some common challenges Project Engineers face when coordinating with cross-functional teams on complex projects?

Project Engineers often encounter challenges when aligning the goals and timelines of various departments such as design, procurement, and construction. Differences in priorities, communication styles, and technical expertise can lead to misunderstandings or delays. Successful Project Engineers proactively facilitate clear communication, set realistic expectations, and regularly monitor project progress to ensure all team members remain on track and any issues are swiftly addressed. Building strong relationships and understanding each team’s workflow are key strategies for overcoming these challenges.

What does a Project Engineer do?

A Project Engineer is responsible for planning, coordinating, and overseeing engineering projects from start to finish. They work closely with project managers, design teams, and contractors to ensure projects are completed on time, within budget, and to the required specifications. Their duties often include preparing technical reports, managing resources, resolving engineering issues, and ensuring safety and quality standards are met. Project Engineers play a vital role in bridging the gap between technical staff and project management.

Industry: Heavy Civil, Hydro, Utility, Geotechnical Projects
Experience Level: 1-2 Years | Entry-Level Role
Compensation: Competitive Pay + Full Benefits
Position Overview:
At Engineering & Construction Innovations, Inc. (ECI), we don’t just build projects—we solve the toughest engineering challenges in heavy civil construction.
We are looking for a Project Engineer who wants to be hands-on, working both in the field and office on complex, high-impact projects. If you're ready to tackle unique construction challenges and build a rewarding career, this is your opportunity.
Some travel within the Midwest region is required.
About Us – Why ECI?
At ECI, we THRIVE outside the box.
That means we take on the toughest engineering challenges and find smart, unconventional solutions to get the job done. From hydroelectric dams to underground infrastructure, we tackle complex projects that demand innovation, expertise, and hands-on problem-solving.

  • Hands-On Experience – Work directly on high-impact infrastructure projects
  • Innovative Problem-Solving – We go beyond conventional methods to engineer smart, effective solutions
  • Career Growth – Work alongside industry experts and gain high-value, real-world experience
  • Tight-Knit Team – A mid-sized company where employees are valued, not just a number
Key Responsibilities
  • Assist in interpreting drawings and specifications for field crews and craft supervision
  • Perform quantity calculations by taking measurements and determining percentage of completed/installed materials and work
  • Assist in the preparation of work plans and work packages
  • Assist in field surveying and layout work, including elevations, control points, and compilation of as-built data
  • Order and schedule material deliveries to ensure project efficiency
  • Perform material takeoffs from drawings, specifications, and contract documents
  • Perform basic engineering calculations and technical drafting to support field operations
  • Assist engineers/project managers with data gathering and preparation for submittals and transmittals to customers, vendors, subcontractors, governmental agencies, and internal use
  • Assist in maintaining basic project record keeping, including daily reports, photographs, RFIs, and memorandums
  • Enter data into the job cost system and participate in reviewing cost reports with job site management
  • Support cost tracking, job costing, and reporting
  • Assist in generating change orders and as-built data to be reviewed by the project manager
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in a construction-related field (Engineering or Construction Management)
  • 1-2 years of combined experience in heavy/civil projects (internship experience preferred)
  • Strong work ethic – willing to do what it takes to get the job done and do it right
  • Passion for heavy civil construction and problem-solving
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications
  • Team-oriented but able to work independently when needed
  • Willingness to travel regionally for project assignments
  • Ability to work for ECI without requiring sponsorship for employment now or in the future
  • Authorized to work in the United States
What We Offer
  • Competitive salary and performance-based bonuses
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance for employees and dependents
  • Wellness program for employees and dependents
  • Simple IRA
  • Paid time off to support work-life balance
  • Opportunities for career development and mentorship
