Position Overview

The Project Engineer will support construction activities by planning, organizing and implementing those management duties (i.e. engineering interface, subcontract and materials management, purchasing, scheduling). The role will provide project administration or support to a Senior Project Engineer on larger projects and manage technical and administrative staff to facilitate instruction management services.

District Overview

Kiewit Energy Canada is headquartered in Calgary, Alberta. We are a major industrial contractor that work on projects that involve construction of oil & gas facilities such as oilsands processing, including steam-assisted gravity drainage facilities, upgrading & refining, midstream facilities, power & co-generation, terminal projects (ex. LNG, LPG, etc.), and major mine developments. We also have a Modular Yard facility in Edmonton, Alberta. Our engineering branch is a leading-edge division that offers innovative engineering services for our current projects and new pursuits in Canada. Our design services group are based in Calgary and Houston offering expertise in process, piping, mechanical, electrical and civil/structural disciplines.  

Location

We are open to hiring individuals out of Calgary, AB and Edmonton, AB. However, our projects may be based anywhere in Alberta, British Columbia, and beyond. The ability to both travel and relocate as-needed is required for this role.

Responsibilities

    With regard to the portion of the work assigned, develop complete understanding of contract plans and specifications.
    Examine/inspect field conditions and identify problems, inaccuracies, and cost saving measures that arise or that may be encountered. Take corrective actions as needed.
    Inspect subordinates' work for compliance with the contract plans and specifications, point out deficiencies and explain and take any corrective action needed.
    Develop and maintain the project master schedule using appropriate techniques and scheduling software with input from other project management personnel.
    Manage document control; receive and log in new issue drawings and other contract documents; maintain document control log.
    Review new issue drawings and contract documents for change of conditions; quantify impact of changes and review with supervisor; distribute new issues to field.
    Prepare monthly cost projections using information generated from project management systems and prepare quarterly cash flow projections.
    Improve project operations by recommending, as appropriate, better methods, staffing and procedural changes.
    Act as managing project engineer/coordinator on multiple projects, providing supervision and on-the-job training for lower level engineers.
    Read and understand plans and specifications. Visualize two-dimensional drawings in three dimensions.
    Manage and support project team including direct reports and others as needed
    Help drive the company environmental health and safety programs at the project level, driving a safety-oriented approach to work.

Qualifications

    Bachelor's degree in a construction-related field or equivalent experience and education in project or field engineering 
    Professional Engineer designation strongly preferred
    5+ years experience in construction or engineering field
    Must have a demonstrated willingness to relocate and travel as needed
    Energy project experience is required 
    Proven abilities and skills in the following: leadership and management of people, communication (verbal and written), planning, organization, delegation as well as teaching and mentoring
    Ability to set standards of excellence in leadership, safety, quality and productivity for his/her subordinates
    Working knowledge and ability to direct the operation of at least the following management systems: accounts payable/accounts receivable, materials control, estimating, job cost updates and subcontracts
