Job description

Position Title:     Project Engineer
Reports To:         Engineering Manager
Position Summary:
PSI is the largest privately owned shipyard in Hawaii, with two of the largest dry docks in the state. We have been in business since 1944 and have a large labor force of skilled craftsman with a full support staff of professionals who comprise of engineering, project management, QA, EHS, accounting, contracts, and human resources.
The Project Engineer serves as the primary technical representative for assigned projects from planning through customer turnover. The position works closely with Project Management, Production, Planning, QA, Estimating, Procurement, and customers to develop engineering solutions, prepare work packages, resolve production issues, and ensure projects are executed safely, efficiently, on schedule, and in compliance with contract requirements.

 Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Ability to accommodate shipyard work hours, shifts, to meet project needs.
  • Provide hands-on support to production personnel to maintain project schedules. 
  • Perform ship checks, field investigations, and verification of existing conditions.
  • Perform basic calculations required for system or structure design and installation. 
  • Review design and repair details of all aspects of vessels – Naval Architecture, Structural, Mechanical, and Electrical.
  • Perform and review 3D model creation. 
  • Work with project team to ensure adherence to vessel repair and build plans. 
  • Provide liaison between Engineering, Project Management, and production operations to resolve any issues, improvements and changes necessary for deliverables.  
  • Develop engineering standards and procedures documents
  • Assist with compiling and managing complex work packages for the project. 
  • Responsible for producing and reviewing documentation for customers including: RFI, Submittals, and CFRs.
  • Ensure project production drawings are completed and distributed to Document Control on schedule, for efficient assembly and fabrication of products. 
  • Participate in production meetings, dock trials, sea trials, inspections, and customer meetings.
Skills/Technical Knowledge:
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Able to understand verbal or written instructions given and to perform correctly.
  • Able to construct and modify project schedules using MS Project or other scheduling software.
  • Working knowledge of fabrication processes such as welding, structural fabrication, piping, machining, rigging, and preservation processes.
  • Knowledge of regulatory standards, including NAVSEA, ABS, IACS, USCG, as well as federal and state regulations preferred
  • Strong computer skills and experience with AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Rhinoceros, Bluebeam, and MS Office (Outlook, Excel, Word, Teams)
  • Good working knowledge of design spiral, vessel arrangements, structural, electrical, mechanical and outfit details, and vessel operations.
  • Must be able to maintain a variety of professional relationships. 
  • Able to read, analyze and interpret the most complex documents including drawings, specifications, applicable codes and standards, for contract and regulatory compliance. 
Education, Training and Experience:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Marine Engineering, or Naval Architecture.
  • Experience and familiarity with industry regulations: ABS, USCG, IACS, NAVSEA, contracts is preferred. 
  •  0–5 years of engineering experience; ship repair, marine, industrial, or heavy construction experience preferred. This position provides opportunities to advance into more senior engineering positions, Engineering Manager, Project Management, and other technical leadership roles as experience and skill base develop.
Qualification/Requirements:
  • Must show proof of your legal right to work in the United States
  • This position requires US Citizenship due to security clearance required for base access
  • Must be able to successfully obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC)
  • Must be able to successfully obtain a Defense Biometric Identification System (DBIDS) Credential to gain access to federally controlled work sites
  • All candidates must submit to and pass a post-offer drug screening and a background check before employment begins.  Failure to complete any of these steps will result in disqualification
  • Valid State of Hawaii REAL ID-Compliant Drivers’ License in good standing or a valid U.S. Passport in addition to a valid Hawaii Driver’s License, if you do not have a REAL ID-Compliant Driver’s License, class 3 or higher
  • Candidates must have access to reliable transportation to get to work and other job sites on time for the start of shift
