What does a project architect do?

A project architect performs a mix of design and administrative duties at an architecture firm. As a project architect, your responsibilities entail contributing to every step of the design and building process. You make site visits to plan how to integrate your designs within the natural landscape or built environment, work with a team of architects and planners to develop several designs for your clients to choose, draft budgets and procurement documents, and complete the designs to your clients’ specifications. Unlike other architects, however, you also contribute to the construction process and oversee its execution.

What does a project architect do?

A Project Architect is responsible for designing and overseeing the construction of buildings from concept through completion. They coordinate with clients, engineers, and contractors to ensure that the project meets design specifications, building codes, and client needs. Project Architects manage project timelines, budgets, and documentation, and often supervise junior architects and other team members. Their role is crucial in transforming ideas into safe, functional, and aesthetically pleasing structures.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a project architect, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Project Architect, you need strong architectural design skills, project management experience, and a professional degree in architecture along with state licensure. Proficiency in BIM software like Revit, AutoCAD, and project management tools such as MS Project is typically required. Excellent communication, leadership, and problem-solving abilities help in coordinating teams and liaising with clients and stakeholders. These skills are crucial for delivering successful projects on time, within budget, and to the client's specifications.

How does a project architect typically collaborate with engineers and contractors during the design and construction phases?

Project Architects frequently coordinate with engineers and contractors to ensure that design intent aligns with structural, mechanical, and construction requirements. This collaboration often involves regular meetings, reviewing technical drawings, and promptly addressing Requests for Information (RFIs) or site issues as they arise. Effective communication skills and the ability to translate design concepts into practical solutions are vital, as the Project Architect serves as a bridge between the client, design team, and construction professionals to keep the project on track and within budget.

What is the difference between Project Architect vs Design Architect?

AspectProject ArchitectDesign Architect
CredentialsArchitect license, possibly LEED or other certificationsArchitect license, focus on design credentials
Work EnvironmentOversees project execution, coordinates teams, manages construction phasesFocuses on conceptual design, creative development, and presentation
Employer & Industry UsageArchitecture firms, construction companies, project managementArchitecture firms, design studios, creative agencies

While both roles require an architecture license and involve design skills, the Project Architect primarily manages the project's execution and coordination, ensuring designs are built according to plans. The Design Architect concentrates on developing innovative concepts and visualizations during the initial design phases. Understanding these differences helps clarify career paths and job expectations in architecture projects.

How much do project architects make in the US?

Project architects in the US typically earn a median annual salary of around $80,000 to $100,000, depending on experience, location, and firm size. Senior project architects with extensive experience and licensure can earn higher salaries, often exceeding $120,000 annually. Salaries may also vary based on the complexity of projects and additional certifications such as LEED or NCARB licensure.

Principal AI SDLC Acceleration Architects to help customers prove the value of VelocityAI SDLC through hands‑on architecture, AI‑enabled engineering, and measurable delivery acceleration.

This role is for senior architects and engineers who can modernize software delivery using AI.

The focus is not only on accelerating traditional Scrum‑based SDLC, but also on helping customers adopt intent‑driven, increasingly autonomous delivery models where AI tools, agents, automation, and human governance turn business or product intent into validated software outcomes.

The ideal candidate is a hands‑on builder, deep architect, strong communicator, and first‑principles thinker who can engage both engineering teams and executive stakeholders.

GlobalLogic estimates the starting pay range for this role to be performed in the US is $180,000 to $250,000 and reflects base salary only. This pay range is provided as a good faith estimate and the amount offered may be higher or lower. GlobalLogic takes many factors into consideration in making an offer, including candidate qualifications, work experience, operational needs, travel and onsite requirements, internal peer equity, prevailing wage, responsibilities, and other market and business considerations.#LI-VK1

Requirements

Good‑to‑Have Skills or Attributes Tools & Frameworks:

Experience with tools and frameworks such as Claude Code, Google Cloud Code, OpenAI Codex, GitHub Copilot, Cursor, Windsurf, LangChain, AutoGen, LlamaIndex, Semantic Kernel, MCP, RAG, or vector databases.

Customer Engagement: Experience in customer‑facing technical roles such as principal architect, field engineer, solution architect, forward‑deployed engineer, technical advisor, or pre‑sales engineering leader.

AI Governance: Strong understanding of AI governance, human‑in‑the‑loop controls, responsible AI, security, observability, and production readiness for AI‑enabled systems.

Job responsibilities

Work directly with customer engineering, product, architecture, and executive teams to identify SDLC bottlenecks and opportunities for AI‑led acceleration.

Design and deliver working proofs using VelocityAI SDLC, modern AI development tools, agentic workflows, and automation.

Help customers move from traditional ticket‑and sprint‑based delivery toward intent‑driven delivery loops that can generate plans, code, tests, documentation, and validation artifacts.

Define and measure acceleration outcomes such as reduced cycle time, faster story‑to‑code conversion, improved test generation, faster code review, reduced handoffs, and improved release readiness.

Present technical approach, architecture, proof results, business impact, and adoption recommendations to both technical and executive audiences.
