Job description

We are Progress (Nasdaq: PRGS) - the trusted provider of software that enables our customers to develop, deploy and manage responsible, AI-powered applications and experiences with agility and ease.

Join us as a Principal DevOps Engineer and help us do what we do best: propelling business forward.  This role will be a hybrid so working between your home office and either our Raleigh NC or Burlington MA office.  You must be local to one of them to be considered for candidacy as we can not provide any relocation packages at this time.

We are looking for a Principal DevOps Engineer to join our enablement team and lead the design, evolution, and scaling of our CI/CD platforms and engineering productivity initiatives. This role will drive architectural decisions, standardization, and adoption of modern DevOps and AI practices across multiple product teams.
 
You will work closely with engineering leadership, architects, and product teams to build secure, scalable, and efficient delivery pipelines that enable continuous development and high-quality releases.
 
In this role, you will:  

Platform & Architecture

  • Define and drive the DevOps platform strategy across CI/CD, build systems, and release engineering
  • Architect scalable and resilient pipelines using tools like TeamCity, Jenkins, or similar
  • Establish standards for pipeline design, modularity, and reusability

CI/CD & Automation 

  • Design and implement end-to-end CI/CD pipelines for multiple product lines
  • Drive adoption of automation-first practices across build, test, and release workflows
  • Optimize build performance, reliability, and scalability

Security & Compliance 

  • Integrate security practices (SAST, secrets management, dependency scanning) into pipelines
  • Define and enforce best practices for secure software delivery
  • Ensure alignment with frameworks such as SAMM, SOC2, etc.

Infrastructure & Cloud 

  • Lead implementation of infrastructure-as-code using tools like: 
    • Terraform
    • Kubernetes
    • Ansible
  • Manage and optimize cloud environments (AWS/Azure/GCP)

Developer Productivity 

  • Improve developer experience by reducing build times and simplifying workflows
  • Introduce self-service capabilities for engineering teams
  • Drive adoption of modern tooling and best practices

Observability & Reliability 

  • Implement monitoring, logging, and alerting for CI/CD systems
  • Ensure high availability and performance of DevOps platforms

Leadership & Influence 

  • Act as a technical leader and mentor for DevOps and engineering teams
  • Collaborate with architects and senior engineers to drive platform decisions
  • Influence cross-team adoption of standards and best practices

Your background: 

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science or related field
  • 8+ years of experience in DevOps, Build Engineering, or Platform Engineering
  • Deep expertise in: 
    • CI/CD tools (TeamCity, Jenkins, GitHub Actions, etc.)
    • Build systems (Gradle, Maven, Ant)
  • Strong experience with: 
    • Cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP)
    • Containerization (Docker, Kubernetes)
  • Proficiency in scripting/programming: 
    • Python, Bash, PowerShell, or Java

Additionally, it would be beneficial if you have: 

  • Secrets management (Akeyless, Vault)
  • Artifact repositories (Artifactory, Nexus)
  • Security tools (Veracode, Polaris, BlackDuckSonarQube)
  • Large-scale enterprise environments
  • Multi-product CI/CD ecosystems
  • Applied use prompt engineering to effectively leverage AI across the SDLC
 
Base Salary Range: $163,850 - $185,000
This position is also eligible to participate in our performance-based annual corporate bonus plan. Final base compensation is determined by a number of factors, including but not limited to job-related skills, education, demonstrable experience, and allowance for future and continued salary growth.
