Job description


What We're Looking For:
Michael Baker International is seeking a Deputy Construction Manager to join our Owner's Project Management Team for the I-10 Mobile River Bridge and Bayway project in Mobile, AL. This project involves the design and construction of a new cable-stayed bridge and 7-mile long Bayway on I-10 using a unique Progressive Design Build delivery method. The project is one of the largest and most complex transportation projects in the country.
What You'll Do:
  • Reports directly to Michael Baker's Construction Manager and assists with the overall management of the Owners Construction Management and Oversight Team that is supporting the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) in delivering the Progressive Design Build project.
  • Manages construction, inspection and testing related technical staff and subject matter experts who are providing project-related construction oversight and technical oversight services for ALDOT.
  • Coordinates and interacts directly with MB I and other Consultant Staff to provide support in a wide range of project-related services related to managing and overseeing two Progressive Design Build teams who will design and construct the project.
  • Works with other Michael Baker staff and the Owner's Design Manager to ensure project compliance with all project specifications.
  • Collaborates with both ALDOT, Design-Build and Construction Management teams to solve problems and develop innovate solutions to save cost and reduce schedule.
  • Interacts directly with Michael Baker's Deputy Project Manager and Construction Manager to ensure seamless cooperation between the Owner's Construction Management and Oversight Team staff and facilitate efficient and effective resolution of issues and requests for information during construction.
  • Assists Michael Baker's Deputy Project Manager with project-related management tasks including invoicing, monthly reporting to ALDOT, financial management and budgeting, and staffing.
  • Assists the Michael Baker management team with various project controls tasks, including risk management, schedule management, and document management.
  • Review of Design Builder submissions as assigned by the Construction Manager or the Design Build Coordinator.
  • Attend meetings as assigned by the Construction Manager.
  • Perform observation required to verify compliance with the DBA and Technical Provisions.
  • Perform observation required to verify compliance with the Design Builders Inspection and Test Plans, work plans and Signed & Sealed construction documents.
  • Perform observations of the Quality Control, Quality Assurance (Independent Quality Firm) and CMT Inspectors performing sampling and testing to confirm compliance with relevant sampling and testing procedures.
  • Assist other Construction Oversight Team members during audits.
  • Complete an Oversight Daily Report.
  • Assist in tracking and logging of material incorporation, material certifications, and material sampling & testing.
  • Assist in tracking of items to confirm Design Builders monthly estimates.
  • Daily coordination with the Resident engineers to assess work and assign field observations.

What You Need to Succeed:
  • Minimum of 5-8 years of experience in Design Build project delivery, preferably on large transportation projects
  • Experience with Progressive Design Build, P3 (Public Private Partnership) or Construction Manager/General Contractor (CM/GC) project delivery is a plus
  • Experience with large, complex bridge and highway projects is preferred
  • Previous project/program management experience, preferably in a senior construction management role working directly in support of a DOT client
  • Experience leading a large team to successfully execute an alternative delivery project is a plus
  • Experience working with large national or international construction firms, and ability to work in a fast-paced environment with construction personnel is a plus
  • PTI Level I and II certifications, ASBI Grout Certifications, ACI and other construction and material sampling and testing certifications.
  • Minimum 5-8 years of intermittent Structural Steel fabrication and precast facility oversight.
  • Auditing experience of material laboratories and off-site fabrication facilities.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills is a must
  • Ability to be on site in the Mobile River Bridge project office in Mobile, AL through the end of the Construction Phase (2031)

Compensation:
The approximate compensation range for this position is $155,000 - $175,000 per year. This compensation range is a good-faith estimate for the position at the time of posting. Actual compensation is dependent upon factors such as education, qualifications, experience, skillset, and physical work location.
