What does a programs manager do?

A Programs Manager is responsible for overseeing and coordinating multiple projects or initiatives within an organization. They ensure that these programs align with the company’s strategic goals, manage resources, set timelines, and track progress. Programs Managers work closely with project managers and team members, addressing any issues that arise and ensuring that deliverables are met on time and within budget. Their role often involves communicating with stakeholders, developing program strategies, and measuring the overall success of the programs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a programs manager?

To thrive as a Programs Manager, you need strong project management skills, strategic planning abilities, and often a bachelor’s degree in business, management, or a related field. Familiarity with project management tools like Asana, Trello, or Microsoft Project, as well as certifications such as PMP or PRINCE2, is highly valuable. Excellent communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills help Programs Managers motivate teams and coordinate across departments. These skills ensure effective execution of programs, alignment with organizational goals, and the successful delivery of projects on time and within budget.

Programs Managers frequently serve as the main point of coordination between various departments such as product development, marketing, finance, and operations. They facilitate regular meetings, set clear milestones, and ensure alignment on project goals and timelines. Effective Programs Managers are proactive in identifying potential bottlenecks and work closely with stakeholders to resolve issues quickly. This collaborative approach not only helps in delivering successful outcomes but also fosters a culture of open communication and teamwork across the organization.

THE ROLE

As the Senior Program Manager for Strategic Programs, you will design, implement, and manage large-scale initiatives that improve how IT teams operate, adopt tools, and build capabilities.

This role owns programs such as learning initiatives, technology enablement efforts and enterprise tool rollouts. You will assess current tools and technologies, partner with engineering, infrastructure, cybersecurity, and operations teams to understand skill gaps and adoption challenges, and use that data to build targeted learning paths and enablement strategies.

You will also support enhancements to centralized repositories of applications and systems, ensuring strong governance, data integrity, and consistent process execution across global teams.

IDEAL CANDIDATE

You are a high-judgment program leader who thrives in complex, evolving environments. You take ambiguous needs and turn them into structured, scalable programs that deliver measurable results across IT and corporate teams. You are equally comfortable engaging with technical teams, executive stakeholders, and cross-functional partners. You understand how technology, process, and learning intersect-and how to design programs that enable real adoption and maturity.

You bring discipline to execution, clarity to communication, and structure to environments that need it.

WHAT THIS ROLE WILL DO:

Program Leadership & Project Management

  • Lead cross-functional programs from intake through execution, ensuring delivery against scope, timelines, risks, and milestones.

  • Build and maintain program roadmaps, detailed project plans, communication strategies, and executive-ready status reporting.

  • Anticipate risks and dependencies early and drive resolution with clear visibility to stakeholders.

  • Leverage project management tools such as Asana to manage execution and transparency.

  • Facilitate program-level meetings, workshops, and working sessions to maintain alignment and momentum.

Cross-Functional Leadership

  • Partner with IT, HR, PMO, Cybersecurity, and vendor partners to align programs with organizational goals.

  • Build strong relationships with executive sponsors, global stakeholders, and subject matter experts.

  • Support PMO standards and contribute to overall program and process maturity.

  • Communicate clearly and consistently with leadership and executive audiences.

WHAT THIS PERSON WILL BRING

Required

  • 5-7 years of program or project management experience in complex technical environments.

  • Experience conducting technology assessments or gathering technical requirements from IT and engineering teams.

  • Proven experience implementing and scaling project management tools (preferably Asana) across large, cross-functional organizations, including governance, templates, and adoption strategies.

  • Strong expertise in designing and managing intake, prioritization, and portfolio planning processes, with the ability to align work to strategic objectives and capacity constraints.

  • Experience managing portfolio reporting, including executive dashboards, status reporting, and RAID management frameworks.

  • Familiarity with Agile, Waterfall, and hybrid delivery methodologies, with the ability to tailor approaches based on project and organizational needs.

  • Hands-on experience leveraging automation and AI-enabled features within project management tools to improve efficiency and insights.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to translate data into actionable insights for senior leadership.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate technical information into actionable insights.

  • Proven experience implementing processes, driving change, and managing cross-functional execution.

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.

  • Familiarity with AI tools usage and prompting (Claude and ChatGPT)

Preferred

  • Background in IT, engineering, enterprise software, or technical enablement.

  • Experience rolling out technology or training tools at scale.

Ideal Personal Characteristics

  • Analytical and structured thinker who can create clarity from complex data.

  • Strong influencer across technical and non-technical teams.

  • Self-driven, resourceful, and comfortable operating with autonomy.

  • Enjoys building structure, implementing process, and enabling teams to work more effectively.

  • Thrives in dynamic environments where programs must scale and evolve.

BENEFITS & PERKS

Our motto is 'Taking Care of Our Own' through 6 pillars of benefits:

  • HEALTH: Medical, vision, dental and mental health benefits for you and your family, with access to a health care concierge, and Flexible or Health Savings Accounts (FSA or HSA)
