WWL Louisiana is seeking an experienced, dynamic, and digitally focused Sports Director to lead the station's sports coverage across broadcast, streaming, digital, and social platforms. The Sports Director is the face of WWL Sports, responsible for delivering compelling storytelling, insightful analysis, and breaking sports coverage that reflects the passion of Louisiana sports fans.
This leader will oversee the station's sports strategy, serve as the primary sports anchor, produce original content, and represent the WWL brand in the community. The ideal candidate is equally comfortable covering the Saints, LSU, Tulane, Pelicans, high school sports, and major sporting events while embracing new storytelling formats including streaming and social media.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead WWL Louisiana's overall sports content strategy across television, streaming, digital, and social platforms.
  • Identify opportunities to grow audience engagement through innovative storytelling and original programming.
  • Collaborate with newsroom leadership to integrate sports coverage into major news events when appropriate.
  • Develop long-term coverage plans for major sporting events, seasons, playoffs, championships, and breaking news.
  • Serve as the primary sports anchor for assigned newscasts.
  • Deliver accurate, engaging, and conversational sports reports.
  • Conduct live interviews with athletes, coaches, and community leaders.
  • Anchor live coverage during major sporting events and breaking sports news.
  • Produce enterprise stories that go beyond scores and highlights.
  • Create content that resonates with both passionate sports fans and general audiences.
  • Produce exclusive content for WWL+, WWLTV.com and social media platforms.
  • Create short-form video and digital-first stories optimized for audience engagement.
  • Participate in streaming specials, live digital coverage, and sports-focused programming.
  • Represent WWL Louisiana at community events, charity functions, speaking engagements, and station promotions.
  • Build relationships with sports organizations, schools, universities, and professional teams throughout the region.
  • Serve as a trusted ambassador for the WWL brand.

Requirements:
  • Minimum 5 years of sports reporting and anchoring experience.
  • Exceptional live reporting and storytelling skills.
  • Strong editorial judgment and commitment to journalistic ethics.
  • Experience producing content for digital and social platforms.
  • Excellent writing, interviewing, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including nights, weekends, holidays, and travel as required.
  • Familiarity with ENPS, Edius or similar newsroom systems preferred.
  • Established presence on social media with demonstrated audience engagement.

Regardless of participation in TEGNA medical plans, ALL employees and their eligible family members receive nine free virtual doctor's appointments with a physician through Teladoc, and 12 free annual therapy sessions with a licensed clinician through Spring Health.
TEGNA offers a generous Paid Time Off (PTO) benefit as well as nine paid holidays per year.
