What is a programming freelance?

Programming freelancers are independent professionals who offer their coding, software development, or related technical skills to clients on a project-by-project basis. Unlike full-time employees, freelancers work for themselves, often managing multiple projects for different clients simultaneously. They may specialize in specific programming languages, frameworks, or industries, and are responsible for finding their own work, negotiating rates, and managing their workloads. Freelance programmers enjoy flexibility in choosing their projects and schedules, but also take on the challenges of self-employment, such as finding clients and handling taxes.

What are freelance programming jobs?

As a freelance programmer, your responsibilities are to develop programs, write code, design software, troubleshoot and update systems, and complete projects as an independent party on a contract basis. Programming jobs include websites, mobile apps, company systems, and more. You can work as a generalist, taking on assignments in various industries with general knowledge of multiple programs, or work as a specialist programmer and focus on one industry, programming language, or specific skill. Freelance programming jobs are typically temporary positions for a company and you are paid a previously agreed amount per job.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a programming freelance?

To succeed as a Programming Freelancer, you need strong coding skills in relevant languages, a solid portfolio of completed projects, and often a degree or certification in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with version control systems (like Git), popular frameworks, and freelancing platforms is highly beneficial. Excellent self-management, communication, and problem-solving abilities set top freelancers apart by ensuring client satisfaction and project delivery. These skills are crucial for building a reliable reputation, meeting client expectations, and securing ongoing work in a competitive market.

How do programming freelancers typically manage multiple client projects and deadlines effectively?

Freelance programmers often juggle several projects at once, which requires strong organizational and time management skills. They commonly use project management tools, set clear expectations with clients, and break projects into manageable tasks with specific milestones. Communication is key—regular updates and proactive discussions about timelines help prevent misunderstandings. Additionally, successful freelancers build buffer time into their schedules to accommodate unexpected issues or urgent client requests.

Your Impact:

To continue pushing boundaries, we need a Video Producer with a passion for visual storytelling, a sharp eye for detail, and the ability to create compelling, results-driven content.

As a Video Producer, you will own every aspect of the video production process, from ideation to execution, bringing creative concepts to life with a strategic mindset.

This role sits within our Creative Team, a tight-knit group of creatives spanning video, photo, design, and production. You will report directly to the Creative Director and collaborate closely with your Creative Team colleagues, while also interfacing regularly with our broader 50+ person Global Marketing and Product teams. This is a hybrid role based at our Somerville, MA campus, requiring a minimum of 3 days per week in-office and full on-site presence during high-priority periods such as major product launches.

Submission of a portfolio is mandatory for consideration for this position.

What You'll Do:

  • End-to-End Production - Own all aspects of video production, including concept and script development, storyboarding, filming, and post-production.
  • Strategic Storytelling - Develop video content that showcases Formlabs' products, resonates with our target audiences, and drives measurable engagement.
  • Creative Leadership - Bring fresh creative concepts to the table and push the visual bar, collaborating with the Creative Team to develop high-impact video ideas that align with strategic goals.
  • Content Optimization - Partner with the marketing team to track video performance, understand audience engagement, and optimize based on data-driven insights.
  • Multi-Platform Distribution - Adapt content for various channels-web, social media, paid ads, and YouTube-ensuring the right format and approach for each platform.
  • Studio & Equipment Management - Maintain our in-house media studio, including organization and upkeep of camera, lighting, and audio systems, ensuring consistent, high-quality output and readiness.
  • Field Production & Travel - Travel to capture user stories and customer footage on location.

About You:

  • 4+ years of experience in video production, with a strong portfolio showcasing visual storytelling and technical expertise.
  • Proficient in industry-standard post-production software (DaVinci Resolve strongly preferred), with disciplined post-production organization including file naming, folder structures, and asset management.
  • Strong understanding of video production techniques, including lighting, composition, and cinematography.
  • Experience with field production, including traveling with professional camera equipment and/or coordinating remote gear rentals.
  • Experience creating content optimized for engagement and conversion across multiple platforms.
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced, highly iterative creative environment, quickly testing and refining ideas.
  • Adaptable, proactive, and solution-oriented, with a hands-on approach to problem-solving and a drive to deliver results.
  • Knowledgeable about video hosting platforms and performance analytics.
  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Familiarity with producing educational and tutorial content.

Bonus Skills:

  • Familiarity with 3D printing.
  • Background in directing on-screen talent or conducting customer testimonial interviews.
  • Comfortable working with freelance vendors and external production houses to scale capacity for larger or specialized productions.
  • Motion graphics and 3D rendering experience.
  • Working knowledge of music, SFX, and other stock asset platforms.
  • Experience creating derivative content such as cutdowns, clips, GIFs, and looping video for websites and social media.
  • Familiarity with transcript and subtitle generation.

Our Benefits & Perks:
