Job description

The Research Engineering Assistant supports the Electronics Instructional Labs (EIL) in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Illinois Chicago by coordinating technical lab operations, maintaining instructional equipment, and assisting with the development and delivery of hands-on electronics laboratories. The position works closely with faculty, teaching assistants, and students to ensure safe, effective, and modern instructional lab experiences.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate the setup, testing, and operation of electronics instructional laboratories supporting undergraduate and graduate ECE courses.
  • Procure, configure, and maintain instructional laboratory equipment and electronic components.
  • Assist faculty in the planning, layout, design, and deployment of laboratory experiments and instructional hardware for electronics-focused courses.
  • Develop, document, and maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs), safety protocols, and lab manuals for instructional laboratories.
  • Supervise the maintenance, calibration, inventory, and lifecycle management of instructional lab equipment and supplies.
  • Provide hands-on technical support during laboratory sessions and troubleshoot hardware and software, instrumentation, and setup issues.
  • Assist in the design, construction, and modification of custom instructional lab setups using schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical drawings.
  • Prepare technical documentation and reports related to lab operations, upgrades, and instructional support activities.
  • Perform related duties as assigned in support of ECE instructional and educational missions.
  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.
