Employer & Industry UsageUsed across tech companies, startups, and IT departmentsCommon in software firms, tech giants, and enterprise IT
Search & Comparison IntentPeople compare to understand roles, skills, and career pathsOften compared to programmers for clarity on responsibilities

While both Programmer Programmer and Software Developer roles involve coding and software creation, Software Developers typically have broader responsibilities including design and testing, whereas Programmers focus mainly on writing code. Understanding these differences helps in choosing the right career path or job search focus.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Programmer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Programmer, you need strong analytical thinking, coding proficiency in languages such as Python, Java, or C++, and a relevant degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with development environments, version control systems like Git, and possibly certifications such as Microsoft Certified: Azure Developer are often required. Problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective teamwork are standout soft skills in this role. These skills ensure that programmers can build reliable software, adapt to changing requirements, and contribute effectively to collaborative development projects.

What are programmers?

Programmers, also known as software developers or coders, are professionals who write, test, and maintain computer programs and software applications. They use programming languages such as Python, Java, C++, or JavaScript to create software solutions that meet user needs or solve specific problems. Programmers often work as part of a team to design, develop, and improve software systems, ensuring that programs run efficiently and securely. Their responsibilities may also include debugging code, updating existing software, and collaborating with other IT professionals to deliver high-quality products.

What are some common challenges programmers face when working on large-scale projects?

Programmers working on large-scale projects often encounter challenges such as managing complex codebases, ensuring effective communication within cross-functional teams, and maintaining code quality as the project evolves. Balancing rapid development with thorough testing and documentation can also be demanding. Additionally, integrating new features without introducing bugs or technical debt requires careful planning, collaboration, and adherence to best practices like version control and code reviews.

Job description

CNC Programmer / Manufacturing Engineer

We're hiring a CNC Programmer for a modern, engineering-driven manufacturing company focused on aerospace, defense, and other highly complex precision-machined components. We believe great manufacturing starts with great engineering, world-class programming, and automation that allows our machinists to focus on making exceptional parts.

This is not a traditional programming role. We're looking for someone who can take ownership of the entire manufacturing process-from customer model and drawing review through process development, first article approval, and production release.

If you're currently programming complex aerospace, defense, medical device, or high-precision components and want to work with cutting-edge equipment, advanced automation, and a growing engineering-focused organization, we'd like to speak with you.

You'll have the opportunity to work with:

  • Siemens NX CAM
  • Hermle 5-Axis Machining Centers
  • Heller Horizontal Machining Centers
  • Zayer Large-Format Machining Platforms
  • DN Solutions Machining Centers
  • Siemens Sinumerik & Heidenhain Controls
  • Wenzel CMM Systems
  • Keyence Inspection Technology
  • Lang & FCS Modular Workholding
  • Haimer Tool Presetting Systems

What You'll Do:

  • Develop CNC programs using Siemens NX CAM for complex 3-axis, 4-axis, 5-axis, simultaneous 5-axis, and mill-turn applications
  • Own manufacturing process development from model review through production release
  • Lead New Product Introduction (NPI) activities including manufacturing planning, tooling strategy, workholding concepts, setup development, and first article execution
  • Translate engineering drawings, GD&T, specifications, and customer requirements into repeatable manufacturing processes
  • Create setup sheets, tooling documentation, work instructions, and process documentation
  • Support fixture and workholding development using modular and custom fixturing solutions
  • Partner closely with machinists during prove-outs, first articles, troubleshooting, and production launches
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives focused on cycle time reduction, setup reduction, tool life optimization, and process stability
  • Work closely with Quality, Engineering, Operations, Customers, and Suppliers to ensure successful execution of complex programs
  • Mentor machinists and junior programmers on machining strategy and process discipline

Requirements

  • 10+ years of CNC programming experience in a precision manufacturing environment
  • Proven experience programming complex 5-axis and/or mill-turn machining centers
  • Expert understanding of GD&T, engineering drawings, and manufacturing process development
  • Ability to take a part from model and print review through first article and production release
  • Siemens NX CAM experience
  • Aerospace, defense, medical device, or other high-precision manufacturing experience
  • Experience with AS9100 environments, first articles, and NPI programs
  • Familiarity with Siemens, Heidenhain, Fanuc, Mazak, or Okuma controls
  • Experience machining titanium, stainless steel, nickel alloys, or other difficult materials
  • Exposure to automation, probing, on-machine inspection, or lights-out manufacturing
  • Experience mentoring machinists or junior programmers

Benefits

  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance.
  • Company-paid life insurance.
  • 401(k) retirement plan with company match.
  • Paid time off and paid holidays.
  • Professional development, technical training, and advancement within a growing organization
