Programmer No Degree information

What opportunities for career advancement are available to programmers without a formal degree?

Programmers without a formal degree can still achieve significant career growth by building a strong portfolio, gaining certifications, and consistently improving their technical skills. Many employers prioritize hands-on experience and demonstrated problem-solving abilities over formal education. Entry-level programmers can progress to mid-level or senior roles by contributing to team projects, learning new programming languages, and participating in open-source communities. Networking and seeking mentorship from experienced professionals can also open doors to advanced opportunities and leadership positions.

Can you become a programmer without a college degree?

Yes, you can become a programmer without a college degree. Many employers value practical skills, problem-solving abilities, and experience over formal education. Building a strong portfolio, contributing to open-source projects, and learning relevant programming languages can help you stand out. There are also many free and paid online resources, bootcamps, and certifications that can help you gain the necessary skills to start a programming career.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a programmer without a degree?

To excel as a Programmer without a degree, you need strong proficiency in programming languages (such as Python, JavaScript, or Java), problem-solving abilities, and a solid portfolio demonstrating your coding skills. Familiarity with development tools like Git, code editors, and frameworks, as well as relevant certifications (e.g., from Coursera, edX, or freeCodeCamp), is highly beneficial. Standout soft skills include self-motivation, adaptability, and effective communication for collaborating with teams and learning independently. These skills are crucial for proving your technical competence and reliability, opening doors to opportunities and career advancement without traditional educational credentials.

What is the difference between Programmer No Degree vs Software Developer?

AspectProgrammer No DegreeSoftware Developer
Required CredentialsOften no formal degree, relies on skills and portfolioTypically requires a degree or equivalent experience
Work EnvironmentTech companies, startups, freelance projectsTech firms, corporate environments, product teams
Industry UsageCommon in coding bootcamps, self-taught communitiesStandard in professional software development roles

Job description

POSITION SUMMARY

NewSat is seeking a Cybersecurity Engineer to support our U.S. Space Force (USSF) customer. This position designs, develops, and implements security capabilities and controls and informs secure configuration design for architecture growth in a system spanning more than 42 deployed environments across approximately 900 servers at multiple classification levels.

Working with only periodic high-level guidance, the Cybersecurity Engineer builds and integrates security functionality into system baselines and pipelines, implements controls in support of accreditation, and resolves non-routine and sometimes complicated engineering problems. This role supports the task order’s Cyber Compliance Activities, Authority to Connect (ATC), Certificate to Field (CtF) support, and Body of Evidence artifact management service areas.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

•      Design, develop, and implement security controls and hardened configurations within system baselines and the master copy server image.

•      Integrate security capabilities into development and deployment pipelines, including containerized and EKS-hosted workloads.

•      Implement and document NIST SP 800-53 controls and applicable cybersecurity overlays; produce implementation statements supporting accreditation.

•      Support RMF activities, Authority to Connect (ATC) and Certificate to Field (CtF) packages by developing, testing, and evidencing technical control implementations.

•      Develop and maintain secure configuration baselines, automation scripts, and Infrastructure-as-Code artifacts supporting repeatable deployment.

•      Remediate vulnerabilities and STIG findings in coordination with vulnerability assessment analysts and system owners.

•      Generate and maintain Body of Evidence (BoE) artifacts, including design documentation, test results, and traceability records.

•      Coordinate with the Security Architect on control design decisions and escalate complex architectural conflicts.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

•      Active TS clearance with SCI eligibility; ability to meet program-directed access requirements.

•      Minimum 4 years of experience developing or engineering security capabilities for DoD or IC information systems.

•      SecurityX or CCSP w/ no degree required or CISSP, CCNP, GCED, CISM, GSLC or CSSLP with a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Cybersecurity, Software Engineering, Information Systems, or a related field.

•      Demonstrated experience implementing NIST SP 800-53 controls and DISA STIG hardening on production systems.

•      Hands-on development or automation proficiency (Python, PowerShell, Bash, or comparable) and familiarity with Linux and Windows server environments.

•      Ability to execute non-routine engineering tasks with only periodic high-level supervision.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

•      Prior experience supporting USSF, Space RCO, or satellite ground system programs.

•      DevSecOps experience with CI/CD pipelines, container security, and Infrastructure-as-Code (Terraform, Ansible).

•      Cloud security experience in AWS, including EKS and GovCloud tenant environments.

•      Experience supporting ATC, ATO or CtF package development and sustainment.
