Position Overview:

Support Staff - Assistant in the Dorm are hardworking, organized, reliable, willing to go the extra mile, and ensure the safety and wellbeing of the students. Must have the ability to build a positive rapport with students, the ability to follow policies and procedures, to be flexible and challenge students when behaviors occur.

Job Duties & Responsibilities:

Support the Dorm Parent with:

  • Creating safe environment where students can work on deficits and practice new behaviors
  • Develop a rapport with each student by being an active listener, provide support and assist the student(s)' reach their goals
  • Develop & maintain an empathetic relationship with students
  • Empower students to practice self-advocacy skills
  • Assisting students with methods of building and maintaining interpersonal relationships
  • Assist students with homework assignments and school projects
  • Encourage students to utilize the Communication Model
  • Hold students accountable on the Residential Tier System
  • Report and document behavioral incidents
  • Utilize the internal Communication Log to document happenings on shift with appropriate communications
  • Meal preparation
  • Student chore completion & room cleanliness
  • Encourage good student personal hygiene
  • Follow medical protocols, including supervising distribution of medications and completing medical incident reports
  • Screen materials brought in by students
  • Ensure health and safety regulations are met in the dorm
  • Assist students prepare for travels on breaks
  • Cooperate and participate with staff and students during shifts
  • Read and respond to emails daily while working
  • Assist in managing conflict resolution
  • Outdoor supervision during free time
  • Participate in inservice trainings

Working Conditions and Hours:

  • Residential (dorm) setting
  • Scheduled for an average of 20 - 28 hours per week
  • Weekday evenings and 1 weekend evening
  • Set 7 - 7.5 hour shifts
  • 10 month active employee
  • Non benefits eligible

Conditions of Employment:

  • A valid Illinois driver's license
  • Ability to pass a criminal background check
  • Ability to pass a driving background check

  • Valid vehicle insurance
  • Physical exam and TB test
  • Provide FIrst Aid and CPR certification or willingness to participate in class at Brehm

Educational Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Some college and/or experience preferred

Knowledge and Experience Preferred:

  • Experience working with Jr High & High School age students
  • Experience with learning differences
  • Experience with conflict resolution, problem solving and mediation experience
  • Residential/boarding/camp experience/school experience
