What is a program project manager?

A program project manager is a professional responsible for overseeing multiple related projects within a program to ensure they align with organizational goals. They coordinate resources, manage schedules, and communicate with stakeholders to deliver value across projects, often using project management tools and methodologies like PMI or Agile. Strong leadership, planning, and risk management skills are essential for this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Program Project Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Program Project Manager, you need strong project management expertise, organizational skills, and a relevant degree or certification such as PMP or PRINCE2. Familiarity with project management tools like Microsoft Project, Jira, or Asana, as well as budget tracking systems, is typically required. Excellent leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills help you coordinate teams, manage stakeholders, and navigate challenges. These abilities are essential for delivering projects on time, within scope, and aligned with organizational goals.

Which pays more, a program manager or a project manager?

Generally, program managers tend to earn higher salaries than project managers due to their broader scope and strategic responsibilities. Program managers often oversee multiple projects and require advanced skills, certifications, and experience, which can contribute to higher compensation.

How do Program Project Managers typically balance stakeholder expectations across multiple projects?

Program Project Managers often manage several projects simultaneously, each with its own set of stakeholders and priorities. Balancing these expectations requires clear communication, regular status updates, and the ability to negotiate resource allocation to meet competing needs. They frequently facilitate meetings to align goals, address risks early, and ensure transparency among teams. Building strong relationships and setting realistic timelines are key strategies to successfully manage stakeholder expectations across the program.

What are the top 3 skills of a program manager?

A program manager needs strong leadership and communication skills to coordinate multiple projects and teams effectively. They should also have excellent organizational and problem-solving abilities to manage complex initiatives and adapt to changing priorities. Familiarity with project management tools and methodologies, such as Agile or PMP certification, is also essential for success in the role.

Can I make 100k as a project manager?

Program project managers can earn $100,000 or more annually, especially with experience, certifications like PMP, and managing large or complex projects. Salaries vary by industry, location, and company size, with senior roles and those in high-demand sectors often exceeding this threshold.

Role Description:

The AI & Digital Innovation team runs many concurrent AI initiatives and vendor engagements, and it pivots priorities often. What it needs is someone who drives the work to done: managing obligations and sub-tasks to completion, running the delivery cadence, keeping the team focused, and tracking things down internally so nothing stalls.

This is a hands-on delivery person, not an analyst. This individual will keep initiatives on rails for the VP/Director, the Program Manager, and solution owners, and they are the recurring channel that moves project outputs and data to stakeholders. They surface capacity constraints and risks up to the Program Managerearly, beforethey become problems.

This person will:

  • Own the day-to-day delivery: break initiatives into sub-tasks, assign owners, chase blockers, keep things moving

  • Run an agile/sprint cadence that fits a team that pivots prioritiesfrequently

  • Be the recurring stakeholder communication channel: pass project outputs and data to the Enablement Lead and stakeholders, send weekly status

  • Surface capacity constraints, dependencies, and risks to the Program Manager early

Responsibilities:

Delivery & Project Management (40%)

  • Break active initiatives into sub-tasks with clear owners and next milestones; drive them to completion

  • Run the team's delivery cadence (sprint planning, stand-ups, retros) suited to frequent priority changes

  • Keep the team focused: track blockers and dependencies, chase them down internally, escalate what is stuck

  • MaintainClickUpas thesingle sourceof truth for what is in flight, who owns it, and what is next

  • Keep deliverables tracked against quarterly roadmap targets; the Program Manager sets priorities

Stakeholder Communication & Reporting (25%)

  • Be the recurring channel that moves project outputs and data from delivery work to the Enablement Lead and business stakeholders

  • Send clear weekly status: what shipped, what is blocked, what is next, what changed

  • Surface capacity constraints, trade-offs, and delivery risk to the Program Manager early

  • Prepare delivery materials for leadership updates and planning cycles with the Director

Program Operations & Coordination (20%)

  • Support the intake, triage, and tracking of AI requests and initiatives; the Program Manager sets priorities

  • Coordinatelogisticswith vendors, contractors, and internal stakeholders to hold delivery timelines

  • Keep team documentation current: decision logs, meeting notes, process maps, runbooks

  • Track down information, approvals, and dependencies across the wider organization

Measurement & Process Support (15%)

  • Maintain the core trackers and dashboards the Program Manager, Director, and solution owners rely on (status, budget-vs-actual, adoption/ROI data feeds); pull numbers on request

  • Document recurring team workflows (intake, triage, rituals) and standardize templates

  • Identifyrepetitive manual work and build lightweight automations (Power Automate, Python, AI-assisted) once processes are stable

Experience and Qualifications:

Must-Have

  • 3-6 years managing the delivery of projects or programs (project management, delivery lead, scrum master, or similar)

  • Demonstrated agile/scrum experience in an environment where priorities shiftfrequently

  • Strong stakeholder communication: can write clear status updates and move information between delivery teams and stakeholders without it getting lost

  • A driver who closes loops: chases blockers, tracks things down, and keeps work moving to completion

  • Comfortable with project management tools (ClickUp, Jira, Asana, or similar)

  • Technically curious: you use AI tools daily (Claude, ChatGPT, Copilot) and can keep up in a technical delivery context

Nice-to-Haves

  • Scrum/PMP/PMI-ACP or equivalent delivery certification

  • Comfortable with numbers: canmaintainbudget trackers, cost models, and ROI/adoption data (Excel/Sheets)

  • Experience building lightweight status or usage dashboards (Excel, Power BI, Looker)

  • Experience with Microsoft Power Platform (Power Automate, Power Apps, Power BI) or basic scripting (including with AIassistance)

  • Familiarity with Azure, Microsoft 365, or enterprise IT environments

  • Real estate, financial services, or asset management industry background

  • Experience coordinating delivery for AI/ML, data, or software teams
