What is a Program Project Manager?

A Program Project Manager is a professional responsible for overseeing and coordinating multiple related projects within a program to achieve organizational goals. They manage resources, timelines, and budgets, ensuring projects are aligned with broader business strategies. Their role often involves communicating with stakeholders, managing risks, and ensuring successful delivery of program objectives. Program Project Managers play a key role in bridging the gap between executive vision and practical execution across various projects.

To thrive as a Program Project Manager, you need strong project management expertise, organizational skills, and a relevant degree or certification such as PMP or PRINCE2. Familiarity with project management tools like Microsoft Project, Jira, or Asana, as well as budget tracking systems, is typically required. Excellent leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills help you coordinate teams, manage stakeholders, and navigate challenges. These abilities are essential for delivering projects on time, within scope, and aligned with organizational goals.

How do Program Project Managers typically balance stakeholder expectations across multiple projects?

Job description

About Greiner Packaging
Greiner Packaging is a leading manufacturer of plastic packaging solutions for food & beverage, healthcare, and consumer goods markets. With a strong focus on innovation, sustainability, and operational excellence, Greiner Packaging partners with global customers to deliver high-quality, scalable, and competitive packaging solutions.
Position Summary
Greiner Packaging is seeking a Project Manager to own and lead the New Product Introduction (NPI) and capital project portfolio across Greiner Packaging US. This role is accountable for driving projects from concept through industrialization with a disciplined focus on execution excellence: on-time, in-full, and within approved cost.
This is a portfolio execution and governance leadership role. The successful candidate will act as a change agent, responsible for establishing, embedding, and enforcing professional project management standards, behaviors, and operating rhythms across the organization.
You will build the foundation of a structured project management office environment-introducing standardized frameworks, portfolio visibility, governance models, and cross-functional accountability to translate strategy and capital plans into reliably executed results.
Key Responsibilities
Portfolio Ownership & Execution Leadership
  • Own and lead the NPI and capital project portfolio from concept through industrialization and formal handover to Operations and Quality.
  • Ensure projects are delivered on time, in full, and within approved cost, scope, and performance targets.
  • Manage portfolio-level timelines, risks, interdependencies, and resource constraints.
  • Translate strategic initiatives and capital plans into structured, executable roadmaps with milestones and governance.

Project Management Frameworks & Governance
  • Design, implement, and embed standardized project management frameworks including:
    • Project charters and business case alignment
    • Stage-gate governance
    • Risk and issue management
    • Change control
    • Post-launch reviews and benefit tracking
  • Build and continuously improve portfolio tracking tools, dashboards, and reporting cadence.
  • Establish clear handover processes to Operations and Quality to ensure sustainable launches.

Cross-Functional Leadership & Change Agent Role
  • Act as a central execution leader across Engineering, Operations, Quality, Supply Chain, Procurement, and Commercial teams.
  • Drive commitment discipline, execution cadence, and transparent escalation of risks, missed commitments, and systemic barriers.
  • Support enterprise portfolio prioritization by highlighting capacity constraints, execution risks, and recommending trade-offs to leadership.
  • Coach and influence cross-functional leaders and project teams, including those without direct reporting lines.

Industrialization, Trials & Continuous Improvement
  • Lead customer and internal trials, factory acceptance testing (FAT), and industrialization activities in partnership with Engineering, Operations, and Quality.
  • Ensure structured problem-solving, root cause investigations, and clear documentation of outcomes.
  • Drive continuous improvement of project execution, governance maturity, and portfolio performance.
  • Track realization of approved business cases and escalate gaps between plan and execution.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Operations, Business, or a related discipline (engineering preferred but not required).
  • Minimum 3 years of experience leading complex, cross-functional project portfolios, including capital and NPI-type initiatives.
  • Demonstrated success driving execution discipline, governance structures, and organizational change.
  • Strong business acumen with experience supporting business cases, capital planning, and benefit realization tracking.
  • Excellent stakeholder management, communication, and influence skills across all organizational levels.
  • Highly organized, structured, and data-driven with the ability to manage competing priorities.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office and portfolio reporting tools.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Formal project management training or certification (PMP, PRINCE2, or equivalent).
  • Lean, Six Sigma, or TPM Early Management experience, particularly in industrial or manufacturing environments.
  • Experience establishing or scaling project management offices or portfolio governance models.
  • Working knowledge of ERP systems (SAP or similar).
  • Experience operating in multi-site manufacturing organizations with capital investment programs.
