What is a program manager?

Program managers are professionals responsible for overseeing multiple related projects within an organization, ensuring they align with strategic goals and deliver expected outcomes. They coordinate the efforts of project managers, manage resources, set priorities, and address risks and issues that arise across the program. Unlike project managers who focus on individual projects, program managers take a broader view, ensuring that all projects within a program work together effectively to achieve long-term business objectives.

What does a program manager do?

The job of a program manager is to plan, organize, and coordinate management programs or external programs for a business or institution. As a program manager, your duties vary depending on the type of organization for which you work, but many of the responsibilities for this role are similar or overlap. You typically supervise numerous associates and analysts who help prepare data and assessments about current programming and how it can be improved. You help to implement new programs for employees or customers and promote them through HR or outreach coordinators and marketing professionals. You also assess individual projects and how they interact with one another.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a program manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Program Manager, you need strong project management skills, strategic planning abilities, and a relevant degree, often supported by certifications like PMP or Agile. Familiarity with tools such as Microsoft Project, Jira, or Asana is essential for tracking progress and managing resources. Exceptional communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills help you motivate teams and navigate complex stakeholder environments. These competencies ensure that programs are delivered on time, within scope, and aligned with organizational goals.

What are some common challenges program managers face when coordinating cross-functional teams?

Navigating these challenges requires strong negotiation and problem-solving skills, as well as the ability to build consensus and foster collaboration. Successful Program Managers proactively establish regular check-ins, promote transparency, and adapt strategies to keep projects on track and maintain team engagement.

Job description

Position Summary... What you'll do...As Director, Transaction Management, you’ll lead the financial and transactional management of Walmart Facility Services, overseeing the operating expense and capital investment activity that keeps our stores and clubs running. You’ll own forecasting, financial modeling, transaction controls, and plan execution across a diverse portfolio—from facility repairs and asset replacements to emergency operations, parts and tools, and recycling and waste programs. Your focus will be giving leaders clear, forward-looking visibility into spend, commitments, risks, and opportunities so they can make better decisions and deliver against annual plans. You’ll also lead 7 direct reports and an organization of 18 associates, building a team known for financial acumen, operational judgment, innovation, and accountability. What You'll Do
  • Deliver against the annual Facility Services plan. Lead forecasting, modeling, transaction management, and plan administration across operating expense and capital investment, driving disciplined execution toward zero variance.
  • Turn complex activity into actionable insight. Create daily and monthly visibility into actuals, commitments, forecasts, risks, and opportunities so leaders can anticipate issues and act early.
  • Connect financial plans to field execution. Ensure teams managing work orders, repairs, replacements, emergency events, assets, parts, and other facility needs have the financial guidance and support required to execute.
  • Improve how decisions get made. Build models and scenarios that help leaders evaluate tradeoffs and allocate resources while strengthening controls, simplifying processes, and leveraging AI and LLMs to improve forecasting and productivity.
  • Lead across the enterprise. Partner with Accounting, Finance, Controllership, Internal Audit, Operations, Procurement, and Facility Services to align financial expectations with operational execution.
  • Build a high-performing team. Lead and develop an 18-person organization with a strong culture of ownership, financial discipline, continuous improvement, and results.
What You'll Bring
  • Strong financial acumen, with experience managing complex operating and capital plans; finance, real estate finance, facilities, or another asset-intensive environment is especially relevant.
  • Advanced forecasting, financial modeling, and analytical skills, with the ability to translate complex data into clear business decisions.
  • A track record of identifying financial risks and opportunities early and driving action to deliver against commitments.
  • Experience leading teams and influencing senior stakeholders across financial and operational functions.
  • Comfort operating in a fast-moving environment where unexpected operational needs can quickly change financial priorities.
  • Proficiency with AI and large language models, with the ability to identify practical ways emerging technology can improve analysis, forecasting, and team productivity.
Success in this role means giving Facility Services leaders a clear view of where the business stands, where it’s headed, and where action is needed—then turning that insight into disciplined execution against our financial commitments. At Walmart, we offer competitive pay as well as performance-based bonus awards and other great benefits for a happier mind, body, and wallet.
