Position Summary

The School of Community Studies is seeking a passionate and experienced Casual Instructor - Social Work to join our team. Reporting to the Program Chair, the Instructor, Social Work is responsible for delivering high-quality instruction, fostering an inclusive and supportive learning environment, and contributing to the ongoing development of curriculum and academic programming.

The successful candidate will evaluate learner progress, mentor learners throughout their educational journey, and collaborate with colleagues and community partners to ensure programs remain responsive to current and emerging industry needs.

This position also includes practicum coordination, which includes developing and maintaining relationships with practicum agencies, facilitating the placement process for learners, and providing additional site visits and supervision to support successful experiential learning opportunities.

What You'll Be Doing:

Deliver Quality Instruction: Provide high-quality instruction within the Social Work Diploma program and other human service programs, including Addiction Studies. Plan and deliver engaging, learner-centred classes using instructional approaches that support diverse learning needs.

Develop lesson plans and contribute to the ongoing review and enhancement of curriculum, instructional materials, manuals, and learning resources to ensure they remain current and aligned with program outcomes. Evaluate learner performance on an ongoing basis, provide timely feedback and progress updates, and maintain accurate academic records in accordance with college requirements.

Foster Learner Success: Create a positive, inclusive, and supportive learning environment that encourages learner engagement and achievement. Meet with learners to address academic concerns such as attendance, classroom conduct, and performance, referring matters to the Program Chair when additional support is required.

Connect learners with appropriate College resources, including tutoring and counselling services, ensure approved accommodations are implemented, and contribute to learner success initiatives such as scholarship and bursary selection, orientation, and graduation activities.

Coordinate Practicum Experiences: Coordinate practicum placements by developing and maintaining strong relationships with community agencies and practicum partners. Facilitate the placement process, support learners and site supervisors throughout the practicum experience, conduct site visits as required, and help ensure learners achieve their field education learning outcomes. Identify opportunities to strengthen existing partnerships and develop new practicum opportunities that enhance learner experiences.

Build Community and Industry Relationships: Maintain strong connections with industry, employers, government agencies, and community partners to ensure programs remain responsive to evolving sector needs. Keep current with changes in the social work profession and incorporate emerging practices into curriculum and instruction.

Participate in advisory committees, community meetings, recruitment events, and articulation and transfer initiatives, while fostering collaborative partnerships that support learner success and expand practicum opportunities. Value and promote diverse perspectives in support of an inclusive academic environment.

Contribute to the College Community: Actively contribute to the ongoing success of the School and the College by following College policies and procedures, participating in professional development, and supporting applied research initiatives where appropriate. Contribute to departmental projects and initiatives, and perform other related duties as assigned in support of the school's goals.

Qualifications:

Minimum:

  • Master's Degree in a related field, with a preference for Master's in Social Work

  • 4 years' experience

  • Police information check including vulnerable sector

  • Registered with the Alberta College of Social Workers

  • An equivalent combination of directly related education and experience may be considered

Preferred:

  • Supervisory experience with practicum students and/or staff preferred

  • Ability to work to full scope of practice

  • Teaching experience is an asset

  • Curriculum development experience an asset

  • Field experience an asset

  • Industry relationships an asset

  • Highly organized
