A Program Manager Contract job is a temporary or fixed-term role where a professional oversees multiple related projects, ensuring alignment with business goals. These managers coordinate teams, manage budgets, mitigate risks, and drive project execution within a specified timeframe. Unlike full-time roles, contract positions typically focus on delivering specific outcomes within a limited duration. Program Manager Contractors may work for a company directly or through a consulting firm. Their expertise is critical in implementing strategic initiatives efficiently.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a program manager contract?

To thrive as a Program Manager Contract, you need strong project management abilities, expertise in contract negotiation, and a relevant degree or equivalent experience in business or a related field. Familiarity with project management software (such as MS Project or Asana), contract management systems, and certifications like PMP or Contract Management Certification are often preferred. These competencies ensure smooth program delivery, compliance with contractual obligations, and effective collaboration with cross-functional teams.

What are the typical challenges faced by program manager contracts and how can they be overcome?

Program Manager Contracts often face the challenge of balancing multiple projects while ensuring all contractual obligations are met on time and within budget. Building strong relationships with clients, vendors, and internal teams is crucial to navigate and resolve challenges as they arise. Being proactive and detail-oriented can greatly contribute to success in this dynamic role.

Job description

Aderant is a global industry leading software company providing comprehensive business management solutions for law firms and other professional services organizations with a mission to help them run a better business. We are motivated by a collective desire to drive the legal industry to the forefront of innovation. With over 2,500 clients around the world, including 95 of the top AmLaw 100 firms, we are changing the outside perception of the legal sphere; where there was once resistance to modernization, we are creating a culture that embraces new ideas and technology.

At Aderant, the "A" is more than just a letter. It is a representation of how we fulfill our foundational purpose, serving our clients. It embodies our core values and reminds us that to achieve success, every day must start with the "A". We bring the "A" to life by fostering a culture of innovation, collaboration, and personal growth. We encourage our diverse teams to bring their whole selves to work - ideas, experience, and passion - to drive our mission forward.

Our people are our strength.

Aderant is seeking a Program Manager.

Aderant is scaling how we plan, execute, and collaborate to strengthen the way we work. This role will drive clarity, delivery, and decision-making across complex initiatives - ensuring teams ship predictably while leaders have real-time visibility into progress, risks, and tradeoffs.

What you'll do in this role:

  • Own end-to-end program delivery for cross-functional R&D initiatives: planning and governance, milestone and dependency tracking, stakeholder engagement, and release readiness.

  • Build operating rhythms for your programs: execution reviews, decision logs, stakeholder updates, and quarterly planning inputs.

  • Create visibility that leaders trust: status narratives, dashboards, and "what matters / what changed / what we need" updates (not just activity reporting).

  • Drive dependency management across teams - identify path blockers early, negotiate sequencing, and escalate with clear options.

  • Improve execution systems: standardize templates and frameworks, intake workflows, program artifacts, and ways of working (lightweight but consistent).

  • Facilitate planning: support quarterly planning, capacity conversations, and tradeoff decisions using data and clear problem statements.

  • Partner tightly with Engineering & Product leaders to translate strategy into executable plans and ensure delivery aligns to outcomes.

  • Run clean ceremonies when helpful (kickoffs, sprint planning, retros, release readiness reviews, stakeholder demos).

What success looks like:

  • Priority programs ship with predictable delivery and fewer late surprises.

  • Leadership gets clear, consistent visibility (risks, decisions, tradeoffs) and faster alignment.

  • Teams spend less time in status churn and more time executing because systems + artifacts are reusable.

  • Dependencies and scope changes are managed proactively with crisp decision points.

What we're looking for:

  • 4-7 years' experience in Program Management / Technical Program Management /

  • Product Ops / Delivery roles in SaaS organizations.

  • Proven ability to lead cross-functional programs with multiple stakeholders and dependencies.

  • Strong written and verbal executive communication - can produce crisp updates and facilitate decisions.

  • Comfortable with modern tooling (e.g., Jira/Confluence, Azure DevOps, GitHub, Smartsheet).

  • Strong fundamentals in scope management, sequencing, risk management, and stakeholder alignment.

  • Experience with SaaS platforms, enterprise customers, regulated/contract-heavy environments, or release governance.

Preferred experience:

  • Experience standing up program governance (intake, prioritization, portfolio views).

  • Familiarity with SDLC / release management concepts and metrics (cycle time, throughput, predictability).

  • Experience partnering with Support/Services on release readiness, communications, and customer impact.
