Job description

POSITION TITLE:     Assistant Principal

REPORTS TO:          Principal 
CATEGORY:              Administration/12 Months/TRS 

FLSA:                        Exempt 
SALARY:                   Regionally Competitive 
 

Primary Purpose:   Facilitates the administration and coordination of a school under the general direction of the principal. 

Major Responsibilities and Duties 

  • Assist in the development and administration of policies dealing with discipline, conduct, and attendance.  Communicate relevant policies and procedures for student discipline, conduct, and attendance to students, staff, and parents.
  • Supervise the reporting and monitoring of student attendance, with follow-up student/parent contact where necessary.
  • Maintain an effective and safe school environment in collaboration with the Manager of School Security. Develop plans for emergency situations, in cooperation with staff and public safety agencies.
  • Plan and coordinate new and ongoing school programs in collaboration with the Principal and teachers, e.g. Restorative Justice and RTI
  • Lead teachers and Instructional team leaders in developing a healthy school culture aligned with the vision, mission and values of the school and the District.
  • Work with and assist faculty in the development of effective classroom management and organization.
  • Monitor progress of all students and work with teachers to constantly assess and improve student achievement results.
  • Implement data-driven instructional practices and lead discussions about student performance.
  • Direct and complete effective teacher and staff evaluations.
  • Make fiscally responsible decisions and work on a building level budget
  • Encourage and support maintenance and cleanliness of facilities.
  • Attend athletic and activity events
  • Serve on and actively participate in committees as directed by the Principal
  • Assume other responsibilities as directed or assigned by the Principal and Superintendent 

Qualifications/Requirements: 

To be considered for this position, the candidate must possess the following required education, certification, skills, experience and/or qualifications: 

  • Master's Degree in educational administration, or related field from an accredited college or institution.
  • Illinois Professional Educator License (PEL) with Administrative Endorsement or comparable out of state certification
  • 3 years Successful teaching experience at the secondary level
  • Qualified Illinois teacher evaluator
  • Qualified Illinois principal evaluator, or ability to receive qualification 

The successful candidate for this position should also possess the following desired skills, experience and/or qualifications

  • Bi-lingual in English and Spanish (desired, but not required)
  • Previous successful experience as Principal or Assistant Principal preferred
  • Experience working with a diverse student population and school community
  • Ability to work effectively with students, staff, colleagues and community
  • Experience evaluating teachers and staff
  • Experience with student services and student activities
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Effective oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills; Perform written and verbal and presentations as necessary
  • Experience in collecting, analyzing and using data in decision making
  • Exhibit a high degree of professionalism in all elements of this position, while serving as a contributing member of the Proviso Township High Schools District 209 and a dedicated role model for other employees. Demonstrate a high sense of integrity, ethics, and honesty in all actions.
  • Knowledge of best practices in administration, program evaluation and staff supervision.
