The Huntsman Mental Health Institute and the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Utah Spencer Fox Eccles School of Medicine is seeking a board-certified Addiction Psychiatrist to join its faculty and serve as Program Director for the ACGME-accredited Addiction Psychiatry Fellowship. This role combines clinical practice with educational leadership and offers a meaningful opportunity to shape the future of addiction psychiatry training within a growing academic department. The successful candidate will also play an essential role in the Addiction Medicine Fellowship.
The Program Director provides overall leadership for the Addiction Psychiatry Fellowship, with responsibility for program quality, accreditation, and continuous improvement. The ideal candidate is passionate about clinical care, medical education, and mentorship, and is excited to lead a well-established fellowship program while contributing to a collaborative, mission-driven department focused on education, innovation, and workforce development. This role also includes leadership of grant-supported training initiatives that advance addiction psychiatry education and workforce expansion. This training leadership role will start as a program co-director, and full role assumption will be coordinated with the outgoing program director to ensure a smooth transition of leadership.
Faculty appointment and rank is based on academic criteria gauging professional accomplishments. We seek qualified professionals to help us meet the challenges of providing high-quality psychiatric services in a market with growing mental health care needs. The Huntsman Mental Health Institute (as part of University of Utah Health) is relied upon by our local and regional communities to improve overall health and quality of life. We do this by maintaining a commitment to outstanding patient care, the highest standard of training for medical students and residents, and continued expansion of our pioneering research programs.

Qualifications:
Applicants should hold or be eligible to apply for a current, unrestricted license to practice medicine in the State of Utah and have expertise in inpatient and/or outpatient addiction psychiatry. Completion of a residency in Psychiatry, and current enrollment in good standing, or completion of an ACGME-certified Addiction Psychiatry fellowship is required. Board certification in Psychiatry and board certified or board eligibility in Addiction Psychiatry and an interest in or experience with graduate medical education is required.
Experience teaching in a residency or fellowship program; prior academic leadership experience (e.g., Associate Program Director, Site Director, core faculty); experience with HRSA, SAMHSA, or other federally funded training grants; Board certification in Addiction Medicine, and commitment to educational quality, continuous improvement, and trainee well-being are preferred.
Faculty Responsibilities:
Clinical care:
Provide high-quality inpatient and/or outpatient addiction psychiatry care; use evidence-based and innovative treatment approaches; demonstrate strong clinical judgment and professionalism; participate in faculty call responsibilities, including cross-coverage as needed
Investigation:
Engage in scholarly activities, quality improvement, or research consistent with academic rank, support fellow scholarly activity in alignment with ACGME requirements
Education:
Supervise and teach fellows, residents, medical students, and other learners; participate in didactic teaching across training levels; mentor trainees and early career faculty in clinical and academic development (see below for specific Program Director duties)
Administration:
Administrative duties associated with clinical care provided; administrative service to the Department of Psychiatry, the Spencer Fox Eccles School of Medicine and the health system, including peer review and participation on committees; report to and be reviewed annually by Division Chief as part of School of Medicine faculty appointment.
Additional ACGME Program Director Responsibilities:
Program Leadership & Accreditation:
Ensure compliance with ACGME Institutional, Common, and Program Requirements; serve as the primary liaison to the ACGME, Review Committee, and Sponsoring Institution; oversee ADS updates, annual program evaluations, and site visit preparation
Educational Oversight:
Design, implement, and continuously refine the fellowship curriculum; ensure appropriate supervision, duty hour compliance, and competency-based education; promote professionalism, universal acceptance, and fellow well-being; protected Program Director time provided per ACGME requirements; dedicated administrative support provided by a program coordinator/manager
Fellow Recruitment, Evaluation & Mentorship:
Lead recruitment, selection, onboarding, evaluation, and promotion of fellows; chair or oversee the Clinical Competency Committee (CCC); manage remediation, probation, or disciplinary processes as needed; provide career guidance and professional mentorship
Faculty Engagement & Development:
Recruit, orient, and support core and affiliated faculty; promote faculty involvement in teaching, evaluation, and scholarship; support ongoing faculty development in education and assessment
Grant Oversight & Program Sustainability:
Provide educational leadership for grant-funded fellowship positions, including HRSA-supported training programs; partner with departmental leadership and administrative teams on grant compliance, reporting, and outcome tracking; contribute to grant renewals and long-term sustainability planning for fellowship training and workforce development initiatives
Quality Improvement & Patient Safety:
Integrate quality improvement and patient safety into fellowship training; ensure fellows actively participate in QI and patient safety initiatives; monitor and address learning environment concerns
The percentage of effort spent in clinical, education, investigation, and administrative activities will be negotiated annually. Specific assignments will be coordinated through the Division Chief and the Vice Chair of Education.
