Job description

Senior Technical Program & Delivery Manager
Boston, MA, US | Full-time | Permanent | Hybrid
Salary: $165,000 to $200,000 DOE

The salary range for this role is broad, as we are able to consider varying levels of experience. Any offer made will carefully take into account level of experience (including relevant industry experience), transferable relevant skills and previous relevant achievements.

About usย

Riverlane'sย mission is to master quantum error correction (QEC) and unlock a new age of human progress. From advances in material and climate science, to complex chemistry simulation for new drug design, quantum computers will help humanity solve some of its most important challenges. But without QEC, the industry's defining technical challenge, such breakthroughs can never be achieved.ย ย Riverlane is the world leader in QEC technology. QEC is a complex problem that requires a range of skills,ย talentย and passion.ย ย

Having raised more than $125M in funding to date to accelerate ourย cutting-edgeย R&D in quantum error correction (QEC), Riverlane partners with many of the world's leading quantum hardware providers and government agencies to make fault-tolerant quantum computing a reality.ย We'reย making remarkable progress and growing fast.ย

About the roleย

This is aย rareย opportunity foraย US-based Senior Technical Program & Delivery Manager to lead the delivery of quantum computing programs across a network of industrial, academic, and government partners. As Riverlane's first PMO hire in the US, you will be building the USAย functionย from the ground up, with significant autonomy and genuine input into how we grow our US presence. Reporting into the Head of PMO (based in the UK), this role sits at the interface of research, engineering, and external partnerships, coordinating complex technical programs involving quantum hardware, software, and experimental infrastructure.ย

Working in an agile environment, you will use tools such as Jira and Confluence to support structured planning and effective collaboration.Strong technical writing is central to the role: you will turn the work of research and engineering teams into clear,ย accurateย reports for partnersย and funding agencies. This is a role for someone whoย enjoys working in deep tech environments and is comfortable balancing structure with flexibility.ย

Thisย ย role works directly with DARPA and US national laboratories. You must therefore be a USAย based person currently within the meaning of US export control regulations (a US citizen, lawful permanent resident, or other protected individual), as the work may involve access to export-controlled technical data.ย

ย Thisย is a hybrid role based in Boston, Massachusettsย (2-3ย days onsite a weekย expected).ย There willย be some travelย expectedย to key partnerย review meetings, and periodically to the UK to collaborate with the wider Riverlane teamย (up to 20% expected).ย Quantum experienceย isย a nice to have but notย requiredย for this opportunity.ย

What you will do:

  • Lead end-to-end delivery ofย Riverlane'sย most strategically important quantum computing programs, spanning QEC, hardware, software, and experimental infrastructure, working directly withย external andย internalย seniorย leaders, government agencies, nationalย researchย laboratories, and hardware partnersย
  • Define milestones, structure, and success metrics, and own execution and program outcomesย
  • Manage risks, budgets, and dependencies across scope, schedule, quality, and critical pathย
  • Coordinate programs across national labs, universities, and industry partners, including quantum hardware providers and agencies such as DARPAย
  • Represent programs in external reviews and forums, and lead multi-institution programs involving partners and agenciesย
  • Translate scientificย objectivesย into execution plans and clear technical reportingย
  • Support grant submissions, tracking, and funding strategyย
  • Work closely with Riverlane's leadership team to shape program priorities, partnerships, and the growth of our US operationsย
  • Establish reporting structures and improve programย andย projectย managementย practices and toolsย
  • This role is expected to evolve into a leadership position responsible for building and scalingย Riverlane'sย program management capability in the USย

Required Experience:

We are looking for someone with the potential to grow into parts of this role and do not expect candidates to have doneย all ofย these things before.ย

  • Experience delivering complex technical hardware and software programsย in deep tech or research environments, as well as for US government programsย
  • Exposure to US government-funded programsย requiredย
  • Experience working with external partnersย
  • Strong cross-functional leadershipย andย ย
  • Strongย Englishย communication skillsย (written and verbal)ย
  • Strong technical writing: you can turn a conversation with a scientist or engineer into a report a partner can assessย ย
  • Degree in a technical discipline, or equivalent experience working in advanced technology environmentsย
  • Comfortable working closely with scientists and engineers: you can ask good questions and understand the answersย ย
  • Proficiencyย with Jira and Confluence, delivering through both agile and hybrid waterfall approachesย ย
  • A working style that earns trust with technical teams: low ego, direct, and curiousย
  • Comfortable working independently in a distributed environment, with the confidence to make decisions and drive forward without close local management or PMO peer supportย
  • The ambition and capability to build and manage a teamย of project managers, with prior experience leading or mentoring others an advantage
    ย
  • Ability to travel nationally and internationally up to 20%ย
  • Must be able to pass a USA Gov Clearance if required

Even better if:

  • National lab or research consortium experienceย
  • Exposure toย USย government-funded programsย
  • Background in quantum computing or HPCย ย
  • Experience in adjacent deep tech fields such as semiconductors or photonicsย ย
  • A formal project management qualification, with PMP preferredย ย

What can you expect from us:ย

  • A comprehensive benefits package that includes an annual bonusย plan, privateย medicalย insurance, lifeย insuranceย andย 401Kย contributionsย
  • Equity, so that our team can share in the long-term success of Riverlaneย
  • Generousย paid time off, and enhanced family leaveย
  • A diverse work environment that brings together experts in many fields (including software and hardware development, quantum information theory, physics and math) and over 20 different nationalitiesย
  • A learning environment that encourages individual, team and company growth and learning, including training and conference budgetsย
