Job Summary:
The English Department at Marist University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of English position in Creative Writing (Fiction) beginning Fall 2027. A willingness to work with undergraduate majors, minors, and non-majors from across campus is central to this position. We encourage applications from broadly trained candidates who can teach introductory writing courses such as Writing for College and Intro to Creative Writing, as well as advanced undergraduate courses that can complement and expand our existing offerings. We are particularly interested in candidates who bring secondary teaching specializations such as Short Story, Memoir, Multi-Cultural Writing, or Creative Non-Fiction. Publishing industry experience as an editor or writer is preferred. This position requires the ability and willingness to teach classes broadly across the discipline, mentor student projects and organizations, and collaborate with campus partners.
Minimum Qualifications:
Candidates must have an MFA or PhD in Creative Writing or English in hand before the start date of the appointment along with evidence of continued creative publications. Teaching experience and evidence of teaching effectiveness at the college level is required. Candidates must have an on-going record of creative publications.
Essential Functions:
The teaching load will be 3-4, but faculty who achieve and maintain an outstanding record of scholarship may be eligible for a 3-3 teaching load. In addition to teaching and research responsibilities, faculty participate regularly in service activities for our students, Marist University, and the community.

- First 6 years University contributes 7.5%, Employee contributes a mandatory 4%.
- University contribution increases to 10.5% in year 7, and 12% after 15 years.
- Employee contribution decreases to 1% in year 7. Remains 1% thereafter.
- Typical eligibility requirements: 1 year of service and 1,000 hours with Marist University.
- 403(b) Tax Deferred Annuity β Roth option available. Voluntary, up to IRS maximum contribution.
- Up to 16 undergraduate credits per semester. Up to 18 graduate credit per academic calendar. Eligibility extends to employee, spouse, and dependent children under age 26.
- University pays 100% tuition only.
- Eligible dependents may be Reimbursed up to $2,000 per semester towards tuition at another accredited institution.
*Eligibility requirements including waiting periods and/or employee probationary periods may apply at the discretion of the University.
About the Department/School:
The English Department includes 18 faculty members and offers a BA in English with Concentrations in Writing, Literature, and Theatre and Minors in Professional Writing, Creative Writing, Literature, and Theatre. The department contributes substantially to our First Year Seminar program, as well as our interdisciplinary programs including Africana Studies, American Studies, Global Studies, Latin American & Caribbean Studies, Asian Studies, and Womenβs, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. The English Department is housed in the School of Liberal Arts, which includes departments in Political Science, History, World Languages & Cultures, and Philosophy & Religious Studies.
