What is a professional software engineer?

Professional software engineers are trained experts who design, develop, test, and maintain software applications or systems to solve problems or meet user needs. They use programming languages, tools, and engineering principles to create reliable and efficient software. In addition to coding, software engineers often collaborate with other team members, participate in code reviews, and follow industry best practices to ensure high-quality software delivery.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a professional software engineer?

To thrive as a Professional Software Engineer, you need strong programming skills, problem-solving abilities, and a relevant degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with version control systems (like Git), software development frameworks, and cloud platforms is typically required, and certifications such as AWS Certified Developer or Microsoft Certified: Azure Developer Associate can be beneficial. Excellent communication, teamwork, and adaptability are soft skills that help you collaborate effectively and navigate changing project requirements. These skills ensure you can build robust, scalable solutions while working efficiently within diverse technical teams.

What are some common challenges faced by professional software engineers when working on large-scale projects?

Professional software engineers working on large-scale projects often encounter challenges such as managing complex codebases, ensuring effective communication across multidisciplinary teams, and maintaining high code quality under tight deadlines. Coordinating with other engineers, testers, and product managers can be demanding, especially when handling dependencies or integrating new features. Staying updated with evolving technologies and adhering to best practices in version control and documentation are also crucial for successful project delivery.

What is the difference between Professional Software Engineer vs Software Developer?

Job description

ABOUT THIS ROLE

As a Software Engineer II at LVT, you will build, scale, and maintain the core server-side services and APIs that power our cutting-edge IoT and Agentic AI platforms. Working within a collaborative, fast-paced team, you will focus on high-performance Node.js architecture, robust database integrations, and reliable data delivery pipelines. This is an exceptional opportunity to sharpen your backend mastery, partner closely with senior engineers on complex system designs, and deliver critical software that bridges our physical field hardware with cloud intelligence.

This role is based full-time in-office out of our Headquarters in American Fork, Utah.

ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Backend Feature Delivery: Write clean, well-tested, and maintainable server-side TypeScript code utilizing Node.js and modern backend frameworks.

  • API Development & Integration: Design, build, and maintain scalable RESTful and GraphQL API endpoints that ensure secure, efficient data communication between edge devices, internal microservices, and client interfaces.

  • Data Layer Management: Work extensively with relational databases (such as MySQL), optimizing queries, managing schemas, and implementing ORM tools like Knex to maintain high data integrity and performance.

  • Bug Resolution & Debugging: Investigate, reproduce, and resolve backend defects across the server architecture, ensuring continuous service stability and seamless platform performance.

  • Testing & Quality Assurance: Write and execute robust unit and integration tests to guarantee server-side reliability, performance under load, and zero-regression deployments.

  • Performance Monitoring & Observability: Utilize modern observability and logging tools to track backend system health, monitor API latencies, and proactively identify performance bottlenecks.

  • Collaborative Teamwork: Actively participate in Agile ceremonies, backend design reviews, sprint planning, and constructive code reviews to elevate engineering quality across the team.

OUR IDEAL CANDIDATE
  • 3-5 Years of Professional Software Engineering Experience: A proven track record of shipping production-grade, server-side code within a modern software engineering environment.

  • Strong Server-Side TypeScript & Node.js Mastery: Hands-on experience building backend applications, microservices, or asynchronous architectures using Node.js and TypeScript.

  • API Architecture Experience: Practical experience developing, documenting, and consuming APIs using REST patterns, GraphQL schemas, or gRPC.

  • Solid Data Layer Competency: Strong working knowledge of relational databases (e.g., MySQL, PostgreSQL) and experience utilizing ORMs or query builders (e.g., Knex, Prisma).

  • Development & Infrastructure Tooling: Comfortable working with version control (Git), containerized environments (Docker), and participating in automated CI/CD deployment pipelines.

  • System Testing & Reliability Practices: Practical understanding of backend testing frameworks, API testing methodologies, and basic application monitoring/logging strategies.

  • Curious & Collaborative Mindset: A strong team-first attitude with a proactive drive to solve complex technical problems, expand backend skills, and accept mentorship from senior team members.
