How much do professional plumber jobs pay per hour?

As of Aug 18, 2026, the average hourly pay for professional plumber in the United States is $30.39, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $23.80 and $34.86 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What does a professional plumber do?

A professional plumber installs, repairs, and maintains piping systems in residential, commercial, and industrial settings. Their work includes fixing leaks, installing fixtures like sinks and toilets, ensuring water supply and drainage systems operate efficiently, and sometimes working with heating systems. Plumbers also diagnose problems, offer solutions, and ensure their work complies with local building codes. They play a crucial role in maintaining the health, safety, and convenience of modern living environments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a professional plumber, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Professional Plumber, you need strong mechanical aptitude, problem-solving skills, and a thorough understanding of plumbing systems, typically supported by completion of an apprenticeship and relevant licensure. Familiarity with pipe fitting tools, diagnostic equipment, and knowledge of local plumbing codes are essential, along with certifications such as a journeyman or master plumber license. Excellent customer service, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently or as part of a team are vital soft skills in this role. These skills ensure safe, efficient, and compliant plumbing installations and repairs, meeting client needs and regulatory standards.

What are some common challenges professional plumbers face on the job and how can they be managed?

Professional plumbers often encounter unexpected complications such as outdated infrastructure, difficult-to-access pipework, or unanticipated water damage. Managing these challenges typically involves thorough site assessments, clear communication with clients about potential risks and costs, and ongoing training in the latest plumbing techniques and safety protocols. Many plumbers also work in teams or collaborate with other construction professionals to solve complex issues efficiently. Staying adaptable and building strong problem-solving skills are key to success in this dynamic field.

What is the difference between Professional Plumber vs Plumbing Technician?

AspectProfessional PlumberPlumbing Technician
CredentialsTrade license, apprenticeship completionTrade license or certification often required
Work EnvironmentResidential, commercial, industrial plumbingInstallation, maintenance, and repair of plumbing systems
Industry UsageGeneral term for licensed plumbing professionalsSpecialized role focusing on specific plumbing tasks

While both Professional Plumber and Plumbing Technician work in plumbing services, the Professional Plumber typically holds a license and handles a broad range of plumbing issues, including complex repairs and installations. Plumbing Technicians often focus on specific tasks like system diagnostics or component replacements. Both roles are essential in the plumbing industry, but the Professional Plumber generally has a broader scope and higher credentials.

How much should a professional plumber be per hour?

The hourly rate for a professional plumber typically ranges from $45 to $200, depending on experience, location, and the complexity of the job. Licensed plumbers with specialized skills or working in high-cost areas tend to charge higher rates.

Job description

Experienced Plumber – Construction & Service

Bold Plumbing Inc. is looking for an experienced, dependable, and skilled Plumber with a minimum of three years of professional plumbing experience to join our team.

We are specifically looking for someone with experience in both plumbing construction and service work. The ideal candidate should be comfortable working on remodels and construction projects while also being capable of diagnosing and completing residential and commercial plumbing service calls.

This is a full-time position for someone who takes pride in their workmanship, can problem-solve in the field, communicates professionally, and is comfortable working independently as well as part of a larger crew.

Responsibilities

  • Perform residential and commercial plumbing service, repair, and installation work.
  • Perform rough, top-out, and finish plumbing for construction and remodel projects.
  • Diagnose plumbing problems and determine appropriate repair solutions.
  • Install, repair, and modify domestic water, drain, waste, vent, and gas piping systems.
  • Perform whole-house and partial water repipes.
  • Install and service water heaters, pressure regulators, shutoff valves, filtration systems, fixtures, faucets, toilets, disposals, and related plumbing equipment.
  • Work with copper, PEX, ABS, PVC, cast iron, and other common plumbing materials.
  • Perform soldered and press copper installations.
  • Read and understand plumbing plans, specifications, and job-site drawings.
  • Lay out piping and plumbing installations based on plans and field conditions.
  • Coordinate plumbing work with project managers, general contractors, and other trades.
  • Troubleshoot existing plumbing systems and concealed plumbing conditions.
  • Identify additional work or potential problems and communicate them to management before proceeding.
  • Communicate professionally with homeowners, contractors, property managers, and other customers.
  • Maintain clean and organized job sites and protect customers' property while performing work.
  • Accurately document work performed and materials used.
  • Follow applicable plumbing codes, safety requirements, and Bold Plumbing Inc. installation standards.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 3 years of professional plumbing experience required.
  • Construction and plumbing service experience required.
  • Strong understanding of residential and commercial plumbing systems.
  • Experience with rough plumbing, remodels, repipes, service calls, troubleshooting, and finish plumbing.
  • Ability to diagnose plumbing problems without constant supervision.
  • Ability to read plumbing plans and understand basic construction drawings.
  • Experience installing copper, PEX, ABS, PVC, and cast-iron piping.
  • Soldering and/or press-fitting experience.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to work independently and efficiently while maintaining quality workmanship.
  • Professional communication skills when dealing with customers and contractors.
  • Dependable, punctual, organized, and accountable.
  • Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.
  • Basic plumbing hand tools appropriate for experience level.
  • Ability to safely perform the physical requirements associated with plumbing and construction work.

What We're Looking For

We're looking for a well-rounded plumber, not someone limited to only one side of the trade.

The right candidate should be able to work on a construction or remodel project one day and confidently handle service and troubleshooting work the next. You should understand how plumbing systems are installed, but also know how to diagnose problems in existing systems and determine the proper repair.

We value plumbers who take pride in doing the job correctly the first time, work efficiently without sacrificing quality, communicate when they encounter unexpected conditions, and treat customers and their property with respect.

This is an opportunity for an experienced plumber looking for a long-term position with Bold Plumbing Inc. and the opportunity to continue developing their skills and responsibilities.

Position: Full-Time
Experience: Minimum 3 Years
Required Background: Plumbing Construction & Service
Company: Bold Plumbing Inc.
Compensation: Competitive and based on experience, skill level, and qualifications.
