Job description

Controls Engineer

Controls Engineer (HVAC Controls)
Position Overview
We are seeking a Controls Engineer to design, program, commission, and support HVAC control systems for commercial and industrial buildings. The role focuses on developing reliable control strategies, implementing ACL-based control logic, integrating building automation systems, and ensuring HVAC equipment operates efficiently and meets project requirements. The ideal candidate combines strong controls engineering fundamentals with hands-on experience in HVAC controls and commissioning.
Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and document control strategies and sequences for HVAC systems using ACL and other control logic tools.
  • Program, configure, and troubleshoot DDC/PLC controllers and building automation systems (BAS/BMS) to implement HVAC controls and integration with other building systems.
  • Commission, test, and validate HVAC control systems on site; perform functional testing, balance checks, and startup support to ensure proper operation.
  • Develop and maintain control system documentation, including I/O lists, sequence of operations, wiring diagrams, schematics, and loop tuning reports.
  • Integrate third-party equipment and protocols (e.g., BACnet, Modbus, LonWorks) with the BAS; coordinate with vendors and subcontractors to resolve interoperability issues.
  • Perform root-cause analysis and provide field troubleshooting and corrective actions for control system faults and performance issues.
  • Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, and project management teams to deliver projects on schedule and to specification; participate in design reviews and value engineering.
  • Provide training and technical support to clients, operators, and maintenance staff on HVAC control system operation and best practices.
  • Keep current with industry standards, codes, and best practices for HVAC controls and building automation systems.
  • Support proposals, cost estimates, and project documentation related to controls work as required.

Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Controls, or related engineering discipline; or equivalent experience.
  • 3+ years of experience in controls engineering with a focus on HVAC controls and building automation systems.
  • Proven experience developing control logic using ACL or similar automation control logic tools and programming environments.
  • Hands-on experience with DDC/PLC programming and configuration; familiarity with common BAS platforms (e.g., Niagara, Tridium, Johnson Controls, Honeywell, Schneider Electric) preferred.
  • Knowledge of HVAC equipment and systems (AHUs, chillers, boilers, VAV, pumps, fans) and sequence-of-operations development.
  • Experience with communication protocols such as BACnet, Modbus, and TCP/IP for building systems integration.
  • Field commissioning and troubleshooting experience, with the ability to work on-site and perform hands-on testing.
  • Strong technical documentation skills and proficiency with AutoCAD, Microsoft Office, and BAS configuration tools.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; ability to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and interact with clients.
  • Valid drivers license and ability to travel to project sites; relevant certifications (e.g., BTL, BMS, controls certifications) are a plus.
