POSITION: Deaf Hard of Hearing Teacher
LOCATION: Various Locations
JOB SUMMARY: The Dougherty County School System is seeking a dedicated and compassionate Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) Teacher to support students with hearing impairments. This role involves developing individualized educational programs (IEPs), collaborating with general education teachers, and ensuring students have access to an equitable learning environment.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. Bachelor's degree or higher in Deaf Education, Special Education, or a related field;
  2. Georgia Teacher Certification in Deaf Education or Special Education with DHH Endorsement
    (or Charter Waiver eligible);
  3. Proficiency in or willingness to develop American Sign Language (ASL) skills;
  4. Knowledge of hearing loss, language development, and accessibility supports,
  5. Experience working with students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing preferred;
  6. Familiarity with assistive listening devices (FM/DM systems, hearing aids, cochlear implants);
  7. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent and the Board may find appropriate.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  1. Ability to relate and motivate all students;
  2. Ability to successfully integrate technology into the classroom while engaging students;
  3. Ability to differentiate instruction and modify curriculum.;
  4. Strong collaboration and communication skills.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
Instruction & Student Support
  • Deliver direct, consultative, and collaborative services to students with hearing impairments based on IEPs;
  • Design and implement lessons using ASL, spoken language, cued speech, or total communication strategies;
  • Support development in language, literacy, auditory skills, speechreading, and self-advocacy;
  • Modify and adapt instructional materials to ensure access to curriculum.

Collaboration & Inclusion
  • Partner with general education teachers, interpreters, speech pathologists, and support staff;
  • Ensure classroom accessibility and accommodations;
  • Participate in IEP meetings, progress reviews, and eligibility determinations.

Assessment & Compliance
  • Monitor student progress using formative and summative assessments;
  • Maintain accurate documentation in compliance with IDEA and district policies.

Family & Staff Engagement
  • Provide guidance and resources to families;
  • Support staff with training on communication strategies and accessibility practices.

Professional Responsibilities
  • Maintain regular attendance and professional conduct;
  • Engage in ongoing professional learning;
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Supervisor.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  1. Ability to lift and carry instructional materials and equipment as needed;
  2. Ability to travel between schools within the district;
  3. Ability to stand and actively move around the classroom for extended periods;
  4. Ability to use clear and expressive communication, whether spoken, signed, or written;
  5. Ability to move and position oneself to provide visual access to signing or spoken instruction;
  6. Ability to respond quickly in case of an emergency;
