Description

This position is responsible for developing, analyzing, and approving structural designs for a variety of non-prestressed precast concrete products and company facilities. This role ensures all designs meet regulatory, customer, and company specifications while supporting production efficiency, safety, and quality objectives. The Professional Engineer collaborates closely with internal stakeholders-including Sales, Production, and Quality Control-and external partners to deliver high-quality, code-compliant designs that align with Knight's operational and business goals.


Essential Functions:

  • Perform all job duties in accordance with company safety, environmental, and operational policies without exception.
  • Contribute to a positive team-oriented culture while upholding the company's values.
  • Develop structural designs for a variety of non-prestressed, precast concrete structures, including drainage inlets, storm and sanitary manholes, box culverts, pipe end walls/retaining walls, liquid containment tanks, and utility vaults.
  • Utilize technical expertise to conduct feasibility analyses and support project specifications, ensuring alignment with stakeholder requirements and expectations.
  • Prepare formal technical documentation and correspondence to justify design decisions, address production considerations, or outline product repair procedures.
  • Monitor project milestones and deliverables, prepare and compiling technical reports, specifications, and structural calculations for both internal teams and external stakeholders.
  • Prepare submittal packages for common Precast structures.
  • Prepare structured design for foundation of company buildings and add-ons to existing company buildings as needed.
  • Assist management with site visits as needed.
  • Self-motivated with strong problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to inspire and engage team members across all levels of the organization.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree (or equivalent) in Engineering from an ABET accredited program.
  • Active Professional Engineer (PE) License in South Carolina or Georgia, and ability to obtain licensure in other states as required.
  • Minimum of 5 years of professional engineering experience, preferably in the precast or concrete manufacturing industry.
  • Strong testing and database design capabilities.
  • Strong understanding of automated/manual manufacturing processes.
  • Demonstrated expertise in analyzing and resolving production process challenges.
  • Strong leadership skills with a proven ability to manage projects and oversee cross-functional teams.
  • Solid background in civil engineering and a strong grasp of civil design principles.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication abilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain strong professional relationships through effective networking.
  • Highly organized with strong project management and prioritization skills.
  • Strong analytical mindset and technical proficiency with the ability to quickly understand industry trends, products, and customer needs.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, file system navigation, and database management tools.
  • Advanced knowledge of structural design principles, including strength design, moving live load analysis (vehicles, trains, aircraft, etc.), soil-structure interaction, flotation resistance, product lifting, and embedded plate/anchor design.
  • Familiarity with relevant design codes and standards, including:
  • State DOT standards and specifications
  • ACI 318-19, ACI 350-20, and related ACI codes
  • ASTM product specifications
  • AASHTO, AREMA, FAA, and other structural design criteria as applicable


Physical Demands:

  • Physical agility required, including the ability to stand, sit, walk, climb, reach, bend/stoop, and lift or push/pull up to 50 lbs. as needed.
  • Frequent use of hands to operate computers, drafting tools, and general office equipment.
  • Ability to focus visually on detailed plans and technical drawings for extended periods.
  • Ability to travel up to 25% of the time to field or customer locations as required.
  • Work performed primarily in an office environment, with occasional exposure to plant or construction site conditions.
