Peacehaven Farm, Inc. is hiring a Live-In Direct Support Professional (DSP) to share a home as a Supported Living arrangement with two adults living with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD). The role is a 24/7 residential placement in a three-bedroom, three-bathroom home, and we are open to a single applicant or a couple filling the role together.
This is steady, meaningful work inside a shared home. You will share daily life with two women who are looking for warm, capable support as they cook, work, build friendships, access the community, and run their household.

Setting: Three-bedroom, three-bathroom home (apartment or single-family) shared with two members
Who can apply: A single person, or a couple (both partners must qualify as DSPs)

Compensation: 50,000.00/year
Housing Benefit: Live-in housing provided as part of the role; Peacehaven will cover up to $1,000.00 per month in rent and utilities for staff. Home is already identified by family.

Peacehaven Farm, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit in Whitsett, NC building an 89-acre integrated residential campus that connects people of all abilities through inclusive living, learning, work, and play. Our DSPs work across many environments, including members’ homes, the wider community, residential settings, day programs, and our RISE & SHINE program. RISE & SHINE delivers Initial Supported Employment Training, Community Living and Supports, and Day Support Services.
Who we’re looking for
Peacehaven is searching for a compassionate person, or a compassionate couple, to support adults with I/DD as a Live-In DSP. DSPs at Peacehaven help children and adults with I/DD work toward their individual goals and participate fully in daily life. The right candidate weaves the responsibilities of the role into the rhythm of a household in a way that respects autonomy and supports growth. The work calls for trust, follow-through, flexibility, and clear communication so everyone in the Peacehaven community can thrive together.
Performing the job
- Adhere to Peacehaven standards and best practices, designed to ensure a healthy culture that embodies Peacehaven’s mission, vision, and core values.
- Document progress of the individuals supported, incidents, strengths, needs, and other relevant matters daily through our Electronic Health Record (OnTarget) and other electronic documentation channels.
- Communicate clearly and effectively with family members, work associates, and community members to maintain a positive environment for all.
- Live and work in an immersive, integrated household that supports skill-building and a healthy lifestyle.
- Comfort, celebrate, motivate, and encourage the individuals you support and your fellow team members.
- Support members’ personal goals, including physical exercise, vocational training, individual food plans, hobbies, social connections, money management, and other tasks that build an appropriate level of independence.
- Provide transportation to jobs, day programs, outings, activities, routine medical appointments, and any other needs related to the people you support.
- Communicate effectively and advocate alongside staff and families or guardians.
- Work with staff, volunteers, and families to assure that the least restrictive environment is available so members can grow, flourish, and have their rights honored.
- Maintain member expenses as needed.
- Participate in Peacehaven staff meetings, training meetings, community life meetings, and other meetings as scheduled. Peacehaven hosts mandatory All Staff meetings on average once a month.
- Embody the mission and vision of Peacehaven by modeling the core values.
- Undertake other duties as assigned by leadership.
Live-in specific responsibilities
In addition to the standard DSP responsibilities, this role includes the following daily realities of a 24/7 residential placement with two members:
- Health and medical care: medication administration and monitoring; scheduling and attending medical, dental, and vision appointments; supporting members managing chronic conditions such as diabetes or epilepsy; responding to urgent health needs.
- Activities of daily living: bathing, grooming, oral care, dressing, meal planning and preparation, eating support, and mobility assistance as needed.
- Behavioral and emotional support: teaching coping skills, offering calming techniques, making in-the-moment environmental modifications, and coordinating with therapists or counselors when needed.
- Social and community integration: shopping trips, recreation, cultural activities, encouraging friendships and family connections, and accessing natural supports.
- Skill development: cooking, cleaning, laundry, communication strategies (including augmentative communication), and emotional regulation skills.
- Safety and risk management: keeping the home hazard-free, running fire drills and evacuation plans, and adjusting supervision based on individual needs and risk assessments.
- Rights and advocacy: self-advocacy training, person-centered planning, and protecting members’ legal rights under disability law.
- Recreation and leisure: hobbies, group activities, structured outings, and quiet sensory time.
- Transportation: safe transport to medical appointments, work, and community outings.
Knowledge, skills, and abilities
- Ability to model and encourage healthy behavior for individuals in social situations, house relationships, facilitating healthy lifestyle choices, and maintaining household cleanliness.
- Effective oral and written English communication skills.
- Desire to work in an environment where varied beliefs and spiritual or philosophical backgrounds are respected and encouraged.
- Maturity demonstrated by the ability to work cooperatively as part of a team.
- Ability to learn about intellectual disabilities, mental health, health disorders, simple nursing care, behavior management strategies, personal hygiene, and related topics.
- Ability to complete and retain necessary training and documentation, with a willingness to obtain additional training (CPR, First Aid, NCI, HIPAA, Client Rights, Bloodborne Pathogens, etc.).
- Honor the confidentiality of participants, records, practices, and business efforts.
Minimum requirements
- Ability to work as a member of a team and a non-profit.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to drive comfortably in the city.
- A vehicle to provide transportation when accessing the community with your member.
- Discrete and confidential in handling private information.
- Ability to pass background checks.
- Valid North Carolina or international driver’s license, and North Carolina auto insurance.
- High school or equivalent diploma, and at least 18 years of age.
- Healthy strategies for self-care and physical well-being.
- Must be drug free.
- Able to work in a tobacco-free environment.
Additional requirements for this live-in role
- Willing to make the shared home your primary residence for the duration of the placement.
- Comfortable with shared living and the rhythms of supporting two members in their own home.
- Pet-free: applicants cannot bring pets into the home.
- If applying as a couple, both partners must complete the full DSP background check, training, and qualification process.
Compensation and benefits
- Competitive pay commensurate with experience.
- Live-in housing in a three-bedroom, three-bathroom home, with Peacehaven covering up to $1,000.00 of rent and utilities for staff.
