Job description

PRODUCTION MANAGER
Full-Time
POSITION OVERVIEW
The Production Manager serves as the operational leader of all production activities for San Pedro Playhouse and Classic Theatre. This position is responsible for planning, budgeting, staffing, scheduling, and overseeing all technical and production elements associated with main stage productions, educational programming, special events, and facility rentals. The Production Manager ensures that productions are delivered safely, on schedule, within budget, and at the highest artistic and technical standards.
Reports to the Vice President of Artistic Programming with day-to-day collaboration and coordination responsibilities involving the Director of Production and Director of Education.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Production Planning and Management
  • Develop and maintain annual production calendars for all productions, educational programs, special events, and rentals.
  • Lead production meetings and facilitate communication among directors, designers, stage managers, technical staff, and administrative leadership.
  • Create and manage production budgets in partnership with Artistic and Finance leadership.
  • Monitor production expenditures and implement cost-control measures as needed.
  • Coordinate production schedules across multiple venues to maximize staffing and resource efficiency.
  • Coordinates the audition and casting process for all productions at San Pedro Playhouse and Classic Theatre.

Staff Leadership and Supervision
  • Hire, schedule, and manage overhire technicians, crew members, actors, musicians, and any additional production contracts.
  • Establish clear expectations, workflows, and accountability measures for production staff.
  • Foster a collaborative, professional, and inclusive production culture.

Production Operations
  • Oversee aspects of production execution including scenery, lighting, sound, costumes, props, projections.
  • Ensure productions are delivered on time and meet organizational quality standards.
  • Coordinate load-ins, technical rehearsals, performances, strikes, and venue turnovers.
  • Manage production-related vendor relationships and equipment rentals.
  • Responsible for coordinating rental and sale agreements of scenic or costume elements from shows, determining appropriate pricing in collaboration with the production team, and ensuring that all transactions align with the organization's policies and financial goals.

Safety and Facilities
  • Partner with the Director of Production and Manager of Operations & Facilities to ensure compliance with all safety policies and industry best practices.
  • Oversee safe working conditions in the scenic shop, rehearsal spaces, backstage areas, and performance spaces.
  • Collaborate with Operations and Facilities staff regarding facility usage, maintenance needs, and capital equipment planning.

Strategic Leadership
  • Contribute to season planning and production feasibility assessments.
  • Evaluate production processes and implement efficiencies that improve productivity and reduce costs.
  • Support organizational goals related to audience growth, artistic excellence, and financial sustainability.

Qualifications
  • Minimum 5 years of progressively responsible production management experience in professional theatre or performing arts.
  • Strong knowledge of theatrical production processes, budgeting, scheduling, and personnel management.
  • Experience supervising technical staff and managing multiple productions simultaneously.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends as required by production schedules.

Essential Functions and Physical Requirements
  • Ability to work evenings, weekends, and irregular hours consistent with production schedules.
  • Ability to move throughout rehearsal, backstage, shop, and performance spaces.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds occasionally and 50 pounds with assistance.
  • Ability to work in environments involving ladders, catwalks, theatrical lighting, construction activities, and moderate noise levels.
  • Ability to use computers and production management software for extended periods.
