Job description

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Production Supervisor is responsible for overseeing daily manufacturing operations and leading production employees to meet safety, quality, delivery, and cost objectives. This role manages workflow, labor utilization, and production performance while maintaining a strong presence on the production floor. The Production Supervisor exercises independent judgment in daily operational decisions, supports continuous improvement initiatives, and fosters a positive, accountable work environment. This is a working supervisory role that performs hands-on production support while maintaining full supervisory responsibility.


  • Lead daily production operations by assigning employees and work team leaders, establishing priorities, managing staffing and labor utilization, and ensuring production goals, schedules, and delivery requirements are achieved.
  • Plan and coordinate production activities based on production orders, available labor, materials, equipment capability, process requirements, and changing business priorities.
  • Drive safety, quality, and operational compliance by enforcing company standards, work instructions, PPE requirements, environmental requirements, and safe work practices while addressing hazards and process risks.
  • Monitor production performance and operating metrics, including productivity, labor utilization, quality, downtime, material usage, and delivery, using data to identify trends, gaps, and opportunities for improvement.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve operational issues involving production processes, equipment, tooling, materials, staffing, and workflow, coordinating with Maintenance, Engineering, Quality, Supply Chain, and other functions when additional expertise is required.
  • Coordinate material and production flow with Supply Chain and Material Handling to ensure materials, tools, equipment, and information are available when needed and production disruptions are minimized.
  • Provide technical and process leadership by interpreting blueprints, specifications, work instructions, bills of materials, engineering change notices, and other technical documentation and ensuring employees understand and follow requirements.
  • Lead continuous improvement and Lean initiatives that improve production flow, equipment utilization, quality, safety, labor efficiency, cost, and overall operational performance.
  • Develop and lead employees through training, coaching, cross-training, performance feedback, skill development, and succession planning while building capable and flexible production teams.
  • Manage employee performance and relations by addressing attendance, conduct, performance, grievances, promotions, transfers, and disciplinary matters in partnership with Operations leadership and Human Resources.
  • Lead daily communication and accountability through production meetings, departmental huddles, tier meetings, and Open Book Management practices, communicating goals, results, company priorities, and operational changes to employees.
  • Maintain accurate production and employee records and use computerized systems to document and retrieve production, labor, material, quality, training, and operational information; perform other duties assigned to support business needs. Maintain an active presence on the production floor, providing hands-on support as needed to meet operational demands.
  • Employees may perform other related duties as needed to meet the ongoing needs of the organization. The frequency and duration of the duties described may vary based on production needs, equipment condition, and workflow requirements.

MINIMUM SKILL/ KNOWLEDGE/ ABILITY/ EDUCATION/ EXPERIENCE:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience supervising or directing two or more employees.
  • Two (2) years of manufacturing or production experience.
  • Basic understanding of production equipment, tools, and manufacturing processes.
  • Ability to follow and enforce safety and operational standards.


PREFERRED SKILL/ KNOWLEDGE/ ABILITY/ EDUCATION/ EXPERIENCE:

  • Associate degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to read and interpret work instructions, control plans, and bills of materials.
  • Experience with production tracking systems or ERP/MES tools.
  • Prior experience in a hands-on supervisory role in a manufacturing environment.


WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Work is performed primarily in a production environment with exposure to dust, fumes, noise, oils, grease, and varying temperatures for moderate to extended periods. Occasional office-based work may be required. All employees are required to follow safety standards and wear required personal protective equipment in designated areas including safety-toe shoes, safety eye glasses, etc.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Sitting 10%, standing/walking/climbing 90%. This position requires the ability to lift, push, or pull materials weighing up to 30 pounds. While performing the duties of this role, the employee regularly walks, stands, climbs, uses hands and fingers to handle or feel objects, and communicates verbally.
