Job description

Production Manager – Sheet Metal Shop


We are seeking an experienced Production Manager to lead the

daily operations of our sheet metal fabrication shop. This position is

responsible for coordinating production, managing shop personnel,

maintaining quality and safety standards, and ensuring projects are

completed accurately and on schedule.


Key Responsibilities

Manage day-to-day sheet metal shop production and workflow.

Plan and prioritize jobs based on project schedules, material

availability, manpower, and delivery requirements.

Assign work to shop supervisors, leads, fabricators, welders,

and machine operators.

Monitor production schedules and make adjustments to prevent

delays and bottlenecks.

Coordinate closely with project managers,

engineering/detailing, purchasing, warehouse, and field

operations.

Review drawings, shop tickets, cut sheets, fabrication details,

and specifications before production.

Ensure fabricated components meet drawings, dimensions,

tolerances, and quality requirements.

Oversee sheet metal fabrication processes including cutting,

forming, bending, rolling, welding, assembly, and finishing.

Monitor operation and utilization of shop equipment such as

press brakes, shears, lasers/plasma tables, roll formers,

welders, and related fabrication machinery.

Ensure materials are staged and available before jobs are

released to production.

Track work-in-progress and finished goods throughout the

shop.

Establish production goals and hold employees accountable

for quality, productivity, and completion dates.

Monitor labor hours and shop efficiency against estimated or

budgeted hours.

Identify opportunities to reduce scrap, rework, downtime, andunnecessary material handling.

Maintain appropriate inventory levels for commonly used sheetmetal, hardware, consumables, and shop supplies.

Coordinate equipment maintenance and repairs to minimizeproduction downtime.

Enforce company safety policies, PPE requirements,housekeeping standards, and safe equipment operation.

Conduct regular shop meetings covering production priorities,safety, quality, and upcoming workload.

Train, coach, and develop shop employees.

Assist with interviewing, hiring, onboarding, scheduling,performance reviews, and disciplinary actions when necessary.

Maintain accurate production, labor, material, quality, andinventory records.

Investigate fabrication errors and implement corrective actionsto prevent repeat issues.

Maintain an organized, clean, professional, and efficient shopenvironment.

Provide management with regular updates regardingproduction status, staffing needs, equipment issues, materialshortages, and schedule risks.


Qualifications

Previous management or supervisory experience in a

sheetmetal fabrication, industrial fabrication, or similarmanufacturing environment.

Strong understanding of sheet metal fabrication processes andequipment.

Ability to read and interpret fabrication drawings, blueprints,dimensions, and specifications.

Strong production planning and scheduling skills.

Experience managing shop employees and multiple jobssimultaneously.

Working knowledge of quality control and shop safetypractices.

Strong leadership, communication, organization, and problem-solving skills.

Comfortable using computers and production, inventory,scheduling, or ERP software.

Ability to work effectively with project management, purchasing,engineering/detailing, warehouse, and field teams.


Preferred Qualifications

5+ years of sheet metal or fabrication industry experience.

2+ years of production management or shop leadershipexperience.

mechanical sheet metal fabrication experience.

Experience with CNC fabrication equipment and automatedproduction machinery.

Experience implementing lean manufacturing, 5S, continuousimprovement, or similar production-efficiency programs.
