Job description

Job Title: Production Controls Engineer

Job Description

The Production Controls Engineer provides real-time production support in a fast-paced manufacturing environment, with a primary focus on minimizing downtime and keeping the production line running smoothly. This role troubleshoots and resolves factory-floor issues, develops effective controls solutions, and ensures that automation systems operate reliably and efficiently.

Responsibilities

  • Provide hands-on production support for the factory floor to ensure continuous and reliable operation of automated equipment and production lines.
  • Troubleshoot and debug automation and controls issues in real time, quickly identifying root causes and implementing effective corrective actions.
  • Program, modify, and maintain PLC-based control systems to support production needs and improve system reliability.
  • Use Siemens TIA Portal to develop, adjust, and optimize PLC programs and related control logic.
  • Work in a fast-paced environment, rapidly implementing fixes and adjustments to keep the line running and minimize downtime.
  • Collaborate with other engineers and production personnel to design and implement solutions to critical, real-time factory issues.
  • Apply internal standards consistently when developing or modifying controls solutions and documentation.
  • Monitor production performance, identify recurring issues, and propose improvements to increase uptime and efficiency.
  • Support robotics and automation systems as needed, ensuring they integrate effectively with existing controls and production processes.
  • Respond to issues at the "speed of relevance," balancing urgency with safe and robust engineering practices.

Essential Skills

  • Experience with Siemens TIA Portal as a primary control engineering tool.
  • Proficiency in PLC programming, including ladder logic and structured text.
  • Demonstrated experience in automation and controls engineering, ideally at an early- to mid-career level (approximately one to two years of relevant experience, as implied by the role).
  • Ability to troubleshoot and debug controls and automation issues in real time on the factory floor.
  • Adaptability and the ability to quickly learn and apply internal engineering and production standards.
  • Strong problem-solving skills in a fast-paced, production-focused environment.
  • Capability to work directly with production teams to resolve issues and maintain line uptime.
  • Comfort working with robotics and related automation technologies.
  • Clear communication skills to explain issues, solutions, and changes to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience supporting high-volume manufacturing or semi-automated factory environments.
  • Experience in designing or implementing controls solutions that directly impact production performance.
  • Ability to handle multiple issues simultaneously while maintaining attention to detail and safety.
  • Interest in contributing to a growing engineering team during a period of expansion and increased opportunity.
  • Willingness to occasionally support overtime needs when production demands require it.

Work Environment

This role is based in a new semi-automated factory located off USA Parkway, offering a modern and dynamic production setting. Engineers work closely with real-time factory operations, addressing critical issues on active production lines and interacting frequently with automation, robotics, and PLC-based control systems, particularly using Siemens TIA Portal. The environment is fast-paced and focused on solving problems quickly to keep the factory running efficiently. While overtime may occur, it is not expected to reach the levels typically seen during major production ramps. The team is in a growth phase with several open positions, providing opportunities for professional development and collaboration. There is potential for flexible scheduling to help with commuting and traffic, and offset schedules may be discussed to support work–life balance.
