Production Design Internships information

What is a production design internship?

Production design internships are short-term, hands-on training opportunities where students or recent graduates assist professional production designers in the creation of visual elements for film, television, theater, or other media. Interns typically help with set construction, sourcing props, creating mood boards, and collaborating with directors and other departments to bring the creative vision to life. These internships offer practical experience, industry networking, and insight into the daily responsibilities of a production designer, making them valuable for those pursuing a career in art or design within the entertainment industry.

What does a production design intern do?

As a Production Design Intern, you can expect to work closely with designers, art directors, and other creative team members on a variety of projects, such as set design, prop sourcing, and creating mood boards. Interns often assist with research, material selection, and supporting the preparation of design presentations. You may also have hands-on tasks like helping with set construction or organizing the design workspace. This internship provides a great opportunity to learn industry-standard workflows and gain practical experience while contributing to real productions.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a production design intern?

To thrive as a Production Design Intern, you typically need a foundation in design principles, familiarity with set construction, and coursework or a degree in film, theater, or a related field. Experience with design software such as Adobe Creative Suite, SketchUp, and AutoCAD is often required, along with knowledge of basic fabrication tools and materials. Creativity, attention to detail, teamwork, and strong communication skills help interns contribute effectively to the collaborative process of bringing visual concepts to life. These skills and qualities are crucial for ensuring efficient workflow, maintaining design integrity, and supporting the overall production vision.
