Job Summary:

The objective of the Bindery Assistant is to efficiently handle all material in the Bindery as it relates to the book manufacturing process.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Learn to interpret the information on the work order and its contents.
  • Follow daily running order provided by Scheduling Team.
  • Pack books into cartons.
  • Safely move materials/books to and from workstation.
  • Perform hand operations as required.
  • Communicate with Supervisor and Scheduling Team as needed.
  • Maintain high throughput by performing quick and efficient make-readies and job changeovers.
  • Inspect for quality defects ensuring quality standards are achieved.
  • Be sure all waste is disposed of properly.
  • Perform preventative maintenance, general cleaning and upkeep of machine and auxiliary equipment.
  • Exercise initiative, ask questions and look for ways of improving productivity.
  • Keep area safe and clean.
  • Adequately communicate with oncoming shift
  • Perform end of shift duties leaving area ready for oncoming shift.
  • Assist in the training of new operators and employees.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Basic Qualifications:

  • High school Diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and /or training; or equivalent combination of education or experience.
  • Ability to read and comprehend instructions.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as work orders, workplace, and safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Basic math skills, add subtract, and ability to use a measuring device.
  • Basic problem-solving skills.

DesiredSkills and Abilities:

  • One year manufacturing experience.
  • Ability to work with the following tools or machinery
    • Pallet mover
    • Knives: razor, hand, slab-off skives
    • Pallet wrap holder
    • Vacuum lift
    • Shaft handling cart

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. frequently, 20lbs constantly
  • Adjusting or moving objects up to 50 lbs. in all directions
  • Constantly be able to work in the work activities
    • Moving to accomplish tasks or moving from one worksite to another,
    • Communicating with others to exchange information,
    • Operating machine and/or power tools
    • Work in noisy environments
  • Occasionally be able to do the listed activities
    • Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles and the like
    • Moving self in different position to accomplish tasks in various environments including tight spaces
    • Remain in stationary position, often standing or sitting for prolonged periods
    • Repeating motions that may include the wrists, hands, and/or fingers
    • Assessing the accuracy, neatness and thoroughness of the work assigned
    • Work in high temperatures, small and/or enclosed spaces
